Re: L.A. Authorities Brace for Huge Immigration Marches

This is what the students are being emailed.

Subject: May 1st Alternative Silent Protest for Students
    Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 23:15:24 -0700 (PDT)

    Hello All,

We have come up with an alternative for students who
do not wish to skip class on May 1st but who still
wish to show their solidarity with the nation's 12
    million undocumented immigrants.

The proposal is to stage a respectful, silent,
in-class protest. We have created a flyer and a
letter that students should hand out to their
professors explaining what they are doing. I have
attached the flyer, and included the text below.

    The flyer is downloadable at:
    http://www.geocities.com/daywithoutanimmigrant

and we have also created a MySpace site to spread the
    news:
    http://www.myspace.com/daywithoutanimmigrant

We urge you to share this information with everyone on
your mailing list! We are trying to reach those who
although sympathetic to our cause, would not otherwise
skip their classes. This is a viable alternative to
    make more voices heard.

    Thank you,

Good luck to all on May 1st.

(Text of the Flyer below. See Attachment to Download)

A DIFFERENT WAY TO SHOW SOLIDARITY ON MAY 1st
    In-class, Silent, Standing Protest

    Attention Students:

    • Do you share the concerns of the immigrant community
    about U.S. Immigration Policy?

    • Do you wish your voice to be heard but do not want
to skip class on Monday May 1st?

We invite you to join our initiative to stage a
silent, standing protest in your classroom. Print the
flyer below and hand it to your professor at the
beginning of class. Respectfully move to the back of
the classroom and remain on your feet for the entirety
of the lecture. As a sign of solidarity with the
millions of immigrants whose legal status has not been
resolved, please remain silent. You may ask your
professor to allow you to make a brief announcement
before class, or to read the letter attached to this
document. Make your fellow classmates aware of what
you are doing; invite them to join you, and to sign
the attached letter. Please be respectful, and
remember not to purchase anything today.

    “A Day Without an Immigrant”
Stand Silent in the Back of Your Classroom
Be a silent reminder of what your class would be like
    if you were not there.

    LETTER:

    Monday, May 1st, 2006

    Dear Professor,

Today, the friends, families, and supporters of the 12
million undocumented immigrants in the United States
are staging a nationwide “day without an immigrant”.
The protest calls for every immigrant to skip work or
school, and to refrain from purchasing any goods or
    services for one day.

I would like to join this protest. Yet, I am aware
that I have an obligation and a commitment to academic
excellence. In solidarity with the immigrant
community, I will remain standing for the duration of
your lecture. In no way do I intend to disrupt your
class or to be disrespectful to you or to my fellow
classmates. Today, as a reminder of what this
classroom would be like if my family or myself had not
immigrated to this country, I will remain silent.

I ask you to please let your colleagues and friends
know that students in your classroom staged this
silent and respectful protest. I also ask you to hand
this letter to the chair of your department, and to
him or her I ask to hand this letter to the president
of the university. I ask the president of the
university to gather all the copies of this letter he
or she received today, and to send them to our State’s
    representative in Congress.

Honorable members of Congress, the students of
    __________________________________________, whose
families immigrated to the United States, stood silent
in their classrooms today, in solidarity with the 12
million undocumented immigrants currently living in
our country. We urge you find a fair and prompt
compromise to solve the legal status of the immigrant
    community.

    Respectfully,
We the People. You the Invader

Actually, if you got called a gringo or a gringa enough times and had the word spit in your face, you wouldn't be fond of it at all. I think it should be one of those words that gets erased from the boards entirely. I got called a "gringa" a couple times yesterday. I imagine if I go out anywhere today, I'd hear it again.

Hopefully, all the hate monger racists who call people those types of names in this city will stay home Monday, May 1, so I won't hear it at all for a change.
well, like they say opinions are like a part of the human body we all have one some just smell worse than others.

I've deliberately used words believed to be offensive by certain groups in order to draw attention to the free, open, and unremorseful use of the word: "Gringo", and also "Anglo", by Mexicans, and other Central and South Americans.

As for this board.........I'm amazed that the administrator of THIS, of all boards, does not censor "GRINGO" as being the unacceptable slur that it most certainly is......

Maybe the administrator would appreciate this opportunity to rectify the censorship issue which is clearly biased and incomplete.

If you have a problem with the job ALIPAC moderators do, why don't you find a better way of addressing it, Diego ?

There is a polite way, and a right way and it appears to me that you do not know anything about either of them.

I am sorry that you are so dissatisfied with the way we do our job. There are A LOT of people at ALIPAC and they seem to think we do a good job of being fair, and unbiased AND if something seems to be a clear mistatement we will give a warning.

I don't know what more you could be asking for.

P.S. Here is a hint of a better way to submit a complaint:

You will not use racist terms on our site that would alienate our diverse base of support for any reason regardless of your intent.

We know what the word Gringo means.

I'm amazed that you would come on our boards and accuse us of censorship and bias when we have done so very much to combat censorship and bias on this issue.

Our policies will not be changing to suit you Diego. It's you that will be adhering to our existing policies or your 5th post will be your last.

Did it ever cross your mind that when our opposition uses harsh and racist rhetoric it speaks for our cause?
