I know Time loves illegals, but this whole thing, and the list, is ridiculous.

4Chan Gives a Boost to 'Undocumented Immigrants' on Time's List

    By CRISTINA COSTANTINI
    Dec. 3, 2012
    abc news

"Undocumented immigrants" may climb to third place in TIME's 2012 Person Of The Year poll if a group of internet pranksters get their way.

Last week, users of 4chan -- an English-language imageboard where users generally post anonymously-- pushed North Korea's Kim Jong-Un to the top of the list as a joke. Now, they've decided to wreak more havoc on TIME's polling system, according to Gawker, by spelling out a damning message for the North Korean government with the first letters of every TIME candidates' name.

The goal is to spell out, "KJU Gas Chambers," which reportedly refers to Camp 22, a concentration camp near the border of Russia and China where prisoners are believed to be killed in gas chambers. That means that if 4channers are successful, "undocumented immigrants" would move to third on the list. Last week, "undocumented immigrants" ranked in the middle of the list, and they are currently in fourth place.

This isn't a first for the internet hooligans. In 2009, 4chan managed to help their creator, Christopher "moot" Poole, reach the top of the list. Still, TIME maintains that the internet poll won't completely dictate the outcome.

"As always, TIME's editors will choose the Person of the Year (issue date December 31, 2012, on sale December 21)," reads a disclosure on the top of the internet poll. "The winner of the people's choice for the person who most influenced the news this year for better or worse will be announced on December 14. Voting closes at 11:59 PM on December 12th."

And the Winner of TIME’s Person of the Year Reader Poll Is…

    By Kelly ConniffDec. 13, 2012

Kim Jong Un is having a good year. After taking over the leadership of North Korea from his late father Kim Jong Il, at the end of 2011, he’s solidified his control over the country, appeared on TIME’s cover and he was even named ‘Sexiest Man Alive.’ (OK, that honor was actually bestowed as a spoof in the satirical newspaper, The Onion, but a Chinese news service mistook the Onion piece for real news and the story went global.)

Now, he’s gotten the most votes in TIME’s completely unscientific reader Person of the Year Poll with 5.6 million votes. Not bad for a man who didn’t make an official public appearance until 2010.

This doesn’t mean Kim is TIME’s Person of the Year. That choice is made by the editors of TIME and will be revealed Dec. 19 on the Today show, on TIME.com and via TIME’s Twitter handle. The poll allows readers to weigh in on the people—and things (Hello, Curiosity Rover!)—whom they think influenced the news, for better or worse, in 2012.

“While we don’t make our selection based on the poll results,” said TIME executive editor Radhika Jones in a recent interview, “it’s always interesting to see where some of our preferred candidates end up.” (For more on how TIME editors choose the Person of the Year see our full Q&A with Jones here)

The Daily Show’ funny man Jon Stewart, Undocumented Immigrants, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas and Burmese leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Sein, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie all made it into the top ten. However, some of the highest vote tallies got a boost from members of Internet forums like 4Chan who launched a campaign to manipulate the results pushing North Korea’s supreme leader to the top of the list.

The largest number of ”no way” votes went to Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi. Despite his unfavorable ranking, his inclusion on the poll has elicited a flurry of passionate responses on social media, as did TIME’s recent exclusive interview and cover story.

Other notable inclusions prompted plenty of online chatter, even if it didn’t result in a top ranking: Pakistani schoolgirl and girls’ education advocate Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for her outspoken activism, placed 15th; Korean rapper Psy, creator of the ‘Gangnam Style’-sensation and the most-watched video in YouTube history, placed 17th.
