A toddler has died from the 'open border flu' in Michigan
As of Oct. 10, 2014, there have been 691 confirmed cases of EV-D68 across 46 states and the District of Columbia, reported the CDC.

On Friday, 21-month-old Madeline Reid succumbed to the effects of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), while being treated at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit (CHMD). She is the state's first recorded death from EV-D68, according to officials with the Michigan Department of Community Health.
CHMD chief medical officer, Dr. Rudolph Valentini, told the Associated Press:
It is never easy to lose a child, and our entire health care team at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is deeply saddened by this family's loss and mourns with them during this very difficult time.
The toddler had been on life support since Sept. 14, as the virus caused organ failure, according to Madeline's family.

This little girl is only the latest child to die from EV-D68...
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed that 4-year-old Eli Waller, died in his sleep in New Jersey from EV-D68. So, far there have been at least five children who have died from this virus.
As of Oct. 10, 2014, there have been 691 confirmed cases of EV-D68 across 46 states and the District of Columbia, reported the CDC.
Of course, that number only accounts for those patients who have been tested for the virus, with CDC confirmation. The actual number of infections now number in the thousands. Dozens of children have also been left with permanent lung disease as well as limb paralysis as a result of contracting EV-D68.
A link between this virus, now afflicting children across the country, and the recent surge of so-called 'unaccompanied minors' into this country from Central America was recently discovered, as EV-D68 was found to be present in that region during a 2013 study.
While the Ebola virus is getting most of the public's attention, EV-D68 is currently ravaging its way through this nation's children, leaving them paralyzed, and in a few cases, dead. So, why is the national press largely ignoring this expanding threat to our most vulnerable citizens?
Could it be that the fault for the spread of this not-so 'kid friendly' virus can be laid directly at the feet of President Obama, and his open-door policy with illegal aliens?

Enterovirus D68 in the United States, 2014
What We Know
States with Lab-confirmed EV‑D68 Infections
From mid-August to October 10, 2014, a total of 691 people in 46 states and the District of Columbia have been confirmed to have respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. Learn more about states with confirmed cases.
- The United States is currently experiencing a nationwide outbreak of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68 associated with severe respiratory illness.
- From mid-August to October 10, 2014, CDC or state public health laboratories have confirmed a total of 691 people in 46 states and the District of Columbia with respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. Learn about states with confirmed cases. This indicates that at least one case has been detected in each state listed but does not indicate how widespread infections are in each state.
- Enteroviruses commonly circulate in summer and fall. We’re currently in middle of the enterovirus season, and EV-D68 infections are likely to decline later in the fall.
- Many state health departments are currently investigating reported increases in cases of severe respiratory illness in children. This increase could be caused by many different viruses that are common during this time of year. EV-D68 appears to be the predominant type of enterovirus this year and is likely contributing to the increases in severe respiratory illnesses.
- Hospitals in Missouri and Illinois were the first to document this increase that was later identified to be caused predominantly by EV-D68 infection. Read more.
- Due to increasing knowledge about the nationwide EV-D68 outbreak, there has been a very large increase in the number of specimens tested from patients with severe respiratory illness. Awareness of these initial results is also contributing to increased recognition of new cases.
- CDC is prioritizing testing of specimens from children with severe respiratory illness. There are likely many children affected with milder forms of illness.
- Of the specimens tested by the CDC lab, about half have tested positive for EV-D68. About one third have tested positive for an enterovirus or rhinovirus other than EV-D68. See map of states with lab-confirmed EV-D68 infections for more information.
- Almost all the confirmed cases this year of EV-D68 infection have been among children. Many of the children had asthma or a history of wheezing.
- EV-D68 has been detected in specimens from five* patients who died and had samples submitted for testing. CDC is reporting test results to state health departments as we obtain them.
- State and local officials have the authority to determine the cause of death, including the role that EV-D68 may have played. They also have the authority to determine the appropriate information to release, and the time to release it. CDC will defer to states to provide this information.
*Investigations are ongoing; CDC will review and update available data every Wednesday.
What CDC Is Doing about EV-D68
CDC is
- continuing to collect information from states and assess the situation to better understand
- EV-D68 and the illness caused by this virus and
- how widespread EV-D68 infections may be within each state and the populations affected.
- helping states with diagnostic and molecular typing for EV-D68.
- working with state and local health departments and clinical and state laboratories to
- enhance their capacity to identify and investigate outbreaks, and
- perform diagnostic and molecular typing tests to improve detection of enteroviruses and enhance surveillance.
- developing and validating a diagnostic test to detect EV-D68 in specimens. CDC will explore options for providing test kits and protocols to state public health labs.
- providing information to healthcare professionals, policymakers, general public, and partners in numerous formats, including Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWRs), health alerts, websites, social media, podcasts, infographics, and presentations.
- CDC has obtained one complete genomic sequence and six nearly complete genomic sequences from viruses representing the three known strains of EV-D68 that are causing infection at this time.
- Comparison of these sequences to sequences from previous years shows they are genetically related to strains of EV-D68 that were detected in previous years in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
- CDC has submitted the sequences to GenBank to make them available to the scientific community for further testing and analysis.
