FORT WORTH - A man accused of firing a stray bullet that wounded a toddler in April was arrested Wednesday trying to reenter the United States from Mexico.

Pedro Cervera, 20, was being held Thursday on aggravated assault charges in Maverick County Jail. Bail was set at $500,000.

Cervera is accused of shooting 15-month-old Donovan Nolden in the back as he played in his front yard April 9. Police said Cervera was shooting at a red car whose occupants had fired at him when it drove by.

Nolden spent weeks in the hospital recovering.

Police had believed Cervera was hiding in Mexico since an arrest warrant was issued after the shooting, police Lt. Dean Sullivan said.

U.S. Marshal fugitive officers had been it contact with Cervera's relatives there in effort to get him to surrender, gang Sgt. F. Serra III said. On Wednesday afternoon, Cervera attempted to enter the United States the Eagle Pass entry port and was detained by border agents.

"It's possible he was on his way up here to surrender himself but we haven't confirmed that yet," Serra said.

Sullivan said detectives will travel to go to Maverick County, interview Cervera and return him to Fort Worth.

I guess he figured the U.S doesn’t prosecute illegal alien criminals. I wonder where he got that idea from. George?
