Here is a link to the full committee hearing information. I haven't yet had time to listen to all of it. https://homeland.house.gov/hearing/o...isa-overstays/

Visa overstays a security risk when 99% of foreigners leave U.S. on time?

To inspect 95 percent of the relevant passengers at the top 30 airports, the officials estimated “would require 3,400 additional officers at an annual cost of $790 million, independent of any other costs, including considerable infrastructure costs, and cause significant delays.”

Yes, they're a major security risk, because there's over 500,000 of them. Imagine how many visas are issued in a year for 1.17% to amount to over 500,000.

No problem. The cost could be included in the visa fee.

Well, if you do the math here, $790 million for 3.400 additional officers indicates a per officer annual cost of $232,353. Would someone please check the math to confirm mine is right? That seems a little high to me.

Furthermore, I don't understand why you're checking passengers at an airport for visa overstays. If they're leaving we don't care. The issue is the ones who haven't gotten their asses to airport to leave yet and who are OVERSTAYING their visas becoming illegal aliens. THOSE are the ones you need the additional officers to hunt down and escort to the airport and stuff on a plane out of here.

Or is there something I'm missing?

You check them in when they arrive, so you know who is here.

You check them out when they leave, so you know who went home.

The ones on the list that didn't leave are the ones you need to find and deport.

If you don't check all of them in and out you have no way of knowing who didn't leave.

You have to pay staff to find the new employees, interview them, run background checks, decide who to hire, train them, house and feed them during training, transport them to their duty station, uniforms, firearms, ammo, computers and other equipment for them to use, etc. It all adds up.

Such common sense JD2 but then there is little of that in politics it seems.
