What Would An Eruption Of The Yellowstone Supervolcano Look Like?

    Michael Snyder 13 hours ago
    7 Comments

On Sunday, the worst earthquake in about 30 years rattled the Yellowstone supervolcano. Overall, there have been at least 25 significant earthquakes at Yellowstone National Park since Thursday, but it is the 4.8 earthquake that has many observers extremely worried. Could such a large earthquake be a sign that the Yellowstone supervolcano is starting to roar to life after all this time? And if it does erupt, what would that mean for the rest of the country? As you will see below, a full-blown eruption at Yellowstone would be absolutely catastrophic. It is estimated that such an eruption could dump a 10 foot deep layer of volcanic ash up to 1,000 miles away and render much of the nation uninhabitable for years to come. In essence, it would instantly bring the United States to its knees.
It is true that it is normal for Yellowstone to experience up to 3,000 earthquakes a year. But most of those earthquakes are extremely small and nothing to worry about.

But the 4.8 earthquake that struck on Sunday is definitely raising eyebrows – especially considering what else has been going on at Yellowstone lately.
For example, the scientists that monitor Yellowstone are telling us that the area where the earthquake was centered has been experiencing “ground uplift” in recent months…
A University of Utah release said that the quake area had experienced a “ground uplift” since August and that “seismicity in the general region of the uplift has been elevated for several months.
I don’t know about you, but the fact that the largest volcano in the U.S. by far has been experiencing “ground uplift” is not very comforting to me.
And there have been reports of strange animal behavior around Yellowstone as well. For example, the following YouTube video of numerous bison literally running away from Yellowstone has gone viral…

That video was captured during the month of March well before the 4.8 earthquake happened.
Could it be possible that those bison sensed that something was coming?
The danger posed by Yellowstone should not be underestimated.
This is something that I have written about before, but since then scientists have discovered that the Yellowstone supervolcano is actually two and a half times larger than they previously believed it to be…
Late last year a new study into the enormous super volcano found the underground magma chamber to be 2.5 times larger than previously thought — a cavern spanning some 90km by 30km and capable of holding 300 billion cubic kilometres of molten rock.
If the sleeping giant were to wake, the outflow of lava, ash and smoke would devastate the United States and affect the entire world.
A full-blown eruption at Yellowstone would be unlike anything that any of us have ever seen before. The following YouTube video attempts to portray what would happen to areas within a few hundred miles of Yellowstone…

But of course the devastation would not just be limited to the northwest part of the country. The following are some more facts about Yellowstone that I compiled for a previous article
#1 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone could be up to 1,000 time more powerful than the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980.
#2 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone would spew volcanic ash 25 miles up into the air.
#3 The next eruption of Yellowstone seems to be getting closer with each passing year. Since 2004, some areas of Yellowstone National Park have risen by as much as 10 inches.
#4 There are approximately 3,000 earthquakes in the Yellowstone area every single year.
#5 In the event of a full-scale eruption of Yellowstone, virtually the entire northwest United States will be completely destroyed.
#6 A massive eruption of Yellowstone would mean that just about everything within a 100 mile radius of Yellowstone would be immediately killed.
#7 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone could also potentially dump a layer of volcanic ash that is at least 10 feet deep up to 1,000 miles away.
#8 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone would cover virtually the entire midwest United States with volcanic ash. Food production in America would be almost totally wiped out.
#9 The “volcanic winter” that a massive Yellowstone eruption would cause would radically cool the planet. Some scientists believe that global temperatures would decline by up to 20 degrees.
#10 America would never be the same again after a massive Yellowstone eruption. Some scientists believe that a full eruption by Yellowstone would render two-thirds of the United States completely uninhabitable.
#11 Scientists tell us that it is not a matter of “if” Yellowstone will erupt but rather “when” the next inevitable eruption will take place.
In essence, a Yellowstone eruption would be on the same level as a Carrington event. Either one would fundamentally change life in the United States in a single day.
Personally, I certainly hope that we do not see an eruption at Yellowstone any time soon. And actually, I am much more concerned about the possibility of an eruption at other volcanoes in the northwest such as Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier.
But if the ground keeps rising rapidly at Yellowstone and earthquakes like the one that struck on Sunday keep on happening, then it would be very foolish for us to ignore the warning signs.
And of course you shouldn’t expect the government to warn you about the potential threat of a Yellowstone eruption until the very last moment. Generally speaking, the government is much more concerned about “keeping people calm” than it is about telling us the truth.
We seem to have moved into a time of increased seismic activity all over North and South America. In such an environment, it would not be wise to say that an eruption at Yellowstone “can’t happen”.
The truth is that an eruption at Yellowstone could happen at any moment. Let us just hope that we are all out of the way when it does.

Are Animals Evacuating Yellowstone National Park?

    Posted on 3/27/2014 by admin

In the recent weeks, we have discussed unusual activity in regards to the super volcano at Yellowstone.

Some folks have reported elevated levels of seismic activity in the area and we have seen some earthquake activity in the United States and around the world. While most experts will say we are over due for Yellowstone to erupt, it would definitely be a catastrophe if it were to occur. We do not have the infrastructure to handle such an event and thus the devastation would be nothing we have ever seen.
The only thing we can do is prepare the best we can and watch for the signs that this super volcano may erupt. We feel it is our responsibility to help look for this information and pass it along to you. It is up to you on what you do with it. With that being said, we found a video posted on March 20th by someone driving through Yellowstone, of Bison making a rapid exit from the direction of the volcano. I don’t have a clue on if this is normal behavior for Bison, but I do know that animals can sense danger. Please take a look for yourself:
I agree there is much to be said for this video, you have to come up with your opinion on it. Share this with others so we can get input on it as well. Could it be a warning to us, or just Bison doing what Bison are supposed to do. You be the judge.
    Stay safe!

    1. It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage...

    1. Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0. If there is a large earthquake, however, the aftershock sequence will produce many more earthquakes of all magnitudes for many months...

    Animals fleeing Yellowstone supervolcano?

'Could be hundreds of things for them to be running'

    Published: 1 day ago

Are bison and other animals fleeing Yellowstone National Park in record numbers because they sense an impending eruption of the park’s supervolcano Yellowstone Caldera?
That’s the theory being tossed around by a number of bloggers who cite recent seismic activity, including a magnitude 4.8 quake that rattled the park near the Wyoming-Montanta border on Monday, just days after a magnitude 5.1 temblor was felt by an estimated 17 million people over a large swath of Southern California.

A file photo of Norris Geyser Basin, which is near the epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 earthquake that rattled Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming on Monday

“Whether I believe this, or whether I don’t believe the story or not, I don’t know. I can tell you this story I saw this morning about the buffaloes running the street … whether or not it’s because of any activity in Yellowstone or not, I don’t know,” said blogger Jay Lee, who posted a story on his site tatoott1009.com.
“But I’ll tell you this, whatever the case may be, that their running away from Yellowstone is an alert of some sort.
“It also could be from this video, where poachers are killing them, chasing them, abusing them, running them around,” he said. “Could be hundreds of things for them to be running. I wanted you to listen [to the videos] and make up your own mind on what to think.”
Seismic activity at Yellowstone isn’t unusual. The land boasts the world’s largest collection of geysers, formed by volcanic activity.

Monday’s earthquake was the largest in 34 years and the latest in a flurry of temblors that began last week, with more than 25 smaller quakes reported in that time by the University of Utah’s seismographs.
“Herds of bison running for their lives on the public roadways and they were not being chased or rounded up, the bison were running down the mountain slopes onto roadways running right past a filming crew. They detect something vast and deadly. The Yellowstone Supervolcano is the only thing there that would fit the bill,” said Tom Lupshu, a self-described survivalist and search-and-rescue expert, in a YouTube video.
Researchers recently discovered that the supervolcano is approximately 2.5 times bigger than previously thought.
A team that included professor Bob Smith of the University of Utah found that the cavern stretches for more than 55 miles.
“We’ve been working there for a long time, and we’ve always thought it would be bigger … but this finding is astounding,” Smith told the BBC.
Smith said researchers are unsure when the supervolcano would erupt again.
They believe the last major eruption happened approximately 640,000 years ago and sent ash across the entire continent of North America.

Viral video of fleeing bison triggers supervolcano rumors

Yellowstone National Park is situated on the Yellowstone Caldera, one of the world’s largest supervolcanoes.

Science Recorder | James Sullivan | Saturday, April 05, 2014

An earthquake that registered 4.8 on the Richter Scale hit the national landmark wildlife preserve of Yellowstone National Park. The size of the blast panicked the American public, who believed such a tremor could provoke a volcanic eruption within the park.

The March 30 quake was the largest the park experienced since the 1980s, and suffered a series of foreshocks and aftershocks which panicked the park’s diverse wildlife collection.

    Some survivalist bloggers
have uploaded videos of the large bison stampedes, proclaiming that the animals are fleeing for their lives, reports The Epoch Times.

Yellowstone National Park is situated on the Yellowstone Caldera, one of the world’s largest supervolcanoes. Although dormant, the caldera attracts millions of visitors around the world who come to see its geysers and hot springs, powered by its hot lava beneath the Earth.

A recent measurement of the caldera itself clocks in at 29 miles wide, much larger than geologists had once thought
. For survivalists like Tom Lupshu of Ohio, the gigantic volcano’s impending eruption is the only plausible explanation for why so many animals like the bison are leaving the park, with 25 percent less bison than were present last winter, as if they can sense the inevitable disaster the earthquakes have been warning of.

Even Lupshu, however, concedes that the animals could be running from hunters or possibly just traveling to find new food sources.

In fact, Yellowstone’s Public Affairs Chief Al Nash told the Christian Science Monitor that Bison leave the park in the springtime to find food.

When accounting for the super volcano’s immense size, consider that it has had three violent eruptions in its existence. The most recent occurred 640,000 years ago, and all three happening over the span of the last 2 million years of Earth’s history, and each have contributed to the size of the caldera, spilling magma over the ground which cooled into rock. A further eruption would cause a reverse cooling cycle, in addition to covering much of the United States and Canada in layers of ash.

Although it is likely that the volcano will erupt again, it will not likely happen any time soon, according to EarthSky, which also refutes the earthquakes and helium emissions as signs of an impending doomsday scenario.

Bison 'running for lives' sense doomsday?

Feds, geologists sound off on Yellowstone eruption fears

    Published: 2 days ago

A brief YouTube video of bison purportedly “running for their lives” through Yellowstone National Park had federal officials scrambling this week to quell the “doomsday” fears of thousands spooked by the unexplained behavior of the thundering herd.
As WND reported, the video raised eyebrows and talk of an impending eruption of the park’s super-volcano after a magnitude 4.8 temblor struck in the northwest section of Yellowstone late Sunday.
Yellowstone officials and government geologists assured guests and the public that no such threat exists.
“It was a spring-like day, and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports, it’s a natural occurrence and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said.
The man who claims to have shot the original video and posted it to his Facebook page says it actually shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park.
“Those bison were running for the sake of running,” said Leckie, in an interview Thursday. “There was nothing chasing them. There was no mudslide. They were just running.”
The video went viral two weeks after it was uploaded under the title, “Yellowstone bison on the run for the joy of spring.”
“Eruptionists and conspiracists pirated the video and misrepresented it, suggesting that it was shot after the earthquakes. Then news agency after news agency started picking up on it, without looking at the original video to see what my actual intent was.
“My little video went from 20 hits to more than 90,000 hits.
“It’s amazing how quickly and rapidly information can be repackaged to convey something other than its original intent.”
Government geologists report no noticeable post-quake changes to the landscape near the super-volcano and say the recent seismic activity does not suggest an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years, according to Reuters.
“The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is exceedingly insignificant,” said Peter Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Center in California.
