Campbell Soup becomes first major company to start GMO labeling

Campbell Soup Co said it will label all its U.S. products for the presence of ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms, becoming the first major food company to respond to growing calls for more transparency about contents in food.

The world's largest soup maker broke ranks with peers and said it supported the enactment of federal legislation for a single mandatory labeling standard for GMO-derived foods and a national standard for non-GMO claims made on food packaging.

The company, which also makes Pepperidge Farm cookies and Prego pasta sauces, said it would withdraw from all efforts by groups opposing such measures. (bit.ly/1OeE1Md)

Several activist groups have been pressuring food companies to be more transparent about the use of ingredients, especially GMO-derived ones, amid rising concerns about their effects on health and the environment.

Several big companies such as PepsiCo Inc, Kellogg Co and Monsanto Co have resisted such calls and have spent millions of dollars to defeat GMO-labeling ballot measures in states such as Oregon, Colorado, Washington and California, saying it would add unnecessary costs.

Monsanto Co said in a statement Friday that it sells seeds to farmers, and does not manufacture or sell food products from crops grown from those seeds.

The six biggest agrochemical and biotech seed companies — Monsanto, Dupont, Dow AgroSciences, Bayer CropScience, BASF Plant Science and Syngenta AG — spent more than $21.5 million to help defeat a 2012 California proposition labeling proposition, according to state election data.

However, in 2014, Vermont became the first U.S. state to pass a law requiring food companies to label GMOs on their products, which will come into effect in July.

Pro-labeling groups such as Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Just Label It cheered Campbell's move.

"We applaud Campbell's for supporting national, mandatory GMO labeling," Scott Faber, senior vice president of government affairs at EWG said.

Advocacy group Just Label It said Campbell's move was a step closer to reaching the goal of a federally crafted national GMO labeling solution.

Campbell said late on Thursday that if a federal solution is not achieved in some time, it was prepared to label all its U.S. products for the presence of ingredients that were derived from GMOs and would seek guidance from the FDA and approval by the USDA.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), which represents more than 300 food companies opposed to mandatory GMO labeling, said it respected the rights of individual members to communicate with their customers in whatever manner they deem appropriate.

However, the GMA said it was "imperative" that Congress acted immediately to prevent the expansion of a costly patchwork of state labeling laws that would ultimately hurt consumers who can least afford higher food prices.

Kellogg and Pepsi were not immediately available to comment on Campbell's move.

Campbell said in July that it would stop adding monosodium glutamate (MSG) to its condensed soups for children and use non-genetically modified ingredients sourced from American organic farms in its Campbell's organic soup line for kids.

The company also said it would remove artificial colors and flavors from nearly all of its North American products by July 2018.

Brazil Slaps Nestle, Pepsi, and Others for Hiding GMO Ingredients

    As Campbell adopts GMO labels

    BY JULIE FIDLER
    POSTED ON JANUARY 9, 2016

Six major food manufacturers – including Nestle, PepsiCo, and Mexican baking company Grupo Bimbo – have been slapped with fines by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, which alleges the companies failed to include labels indicating the use of genetically modified ingredients.

The fines range from $277,400 to just over $1 million, for an estimated total of $3 million.

In 2010, inspections carried out by Brazil’s Consumer Protection Agency Senacon discovered that GMOs had been used in cake mixes, snacks, and a variety of other products being sold in the nation’s grocery stores.

Senacon concluded that the companies violated Brazilian consumer rights, including the right to information, freedom of choice, and the right for protection against abusive corporate practices. [1]

Food companies have been required since 2003 to place a label consisting of a yellow triangle with the letter “T” inside (meaning “transgenic”) on food products containing more than 1% of GMOs.

“The decision confirms the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to require all products that use genetically modified ingredients to include this information on their labels,” said Ana Paula Bortoletto, a researcher with the Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense.

GMOs were banned in Brazil in 1998, after the institute won a lawsuit. But GMOs are everywhere in that nation, thanks to black market GMO seeds that made their way into crops. The spread of the GM seeds forced the country to adopt GM technologies, and Brazil is now the second-largest grower of GMO crops in the world, with more than 104 acres of GMO crops in production in 2014.

According to the Genetic Literacy Project, “more than 93% of the country’s soybean crop is GM and almost 90% of the corn crop. GM cotton, more recently introduced, makes up 65.1%.”

Brazil suffered massive environmental and financial costs when GM “Bt” corn proved to be defenseless against the same, destructive caterpillars it was engineered to protect against.

The Association of Soybean and Corn Producers of the Mato Grosso region called on Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, and Dow companies to offer solutions and to help farmers recoup their losses (ones who spent the equivalent of $54 per hectare to spray extra pesticides.

As a result of the failed Bt corn, Brazilian consumers are highly suspicious of GM foods, which could explain why Nestle, PepsiCo, Bimbo, and the other companies opted to skirt Brazil’s mandatory label law. [2]

The news comes as another food giant – Campbell Soup Co. – announced that it will be adopting GM labels voluntarily.

Campbell Soup to switch to BPA-free cans by 2017

Cans of Campbell's brand soups are seen at the Safeway store in Wheaton, Maryland February 13, 2015.
    REUTERS/GARY CAMERON

Campbell Soup Co, the world's largest soup maker, said it would completely switch to cans that do not use the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) for their linings in North America by the middle of 2017.

Bisphenol A is used to stiffen plastics that some studies suggest pose health risks. It is a component in metal can coating and protects food from directly contacting metal surfaces.

The company said it began using cans with linings made from acrylic or polyester materials in March and will continue to introduce the new linings across the United States and Canada through 2017.

The products that will be packaged in non-BPA lined cans include all varieties of Campbell's soups and gravies, Swanson broth and SpaghettiOs pasta, Campbell said.

The company said it was on track to have 75 percent of its soup portfolio in non-BPA lined cans by December.

California regulators last year added BPA to a list of chemicals known to cause harm. Containers containing any chemicals in the list might soon be required to carry a label explaining their dangers.

Smart move - they know how to cash in on a good thing.....

    What is BPA?

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is an industrial chemical used to make two common synthetics:

    • Polycarbonate, a clear, rigid, shatter-resistant plastic found in a wide variety of consumer products, including food and drink containers.
    • Epoxy resins, used in industrial adhesives and high-performance coatings. Epoxy coating lines most of the 131 billion food and beverage cans made in the U.S. annually.

    What are its health risks?

BPA is a synthetic estrogen that can disrupt the endocrine system, even in small amounts. It has been linked to a wide variety of ills, including infertility, breast and reproductive system cancer, obesity, diabetes, early puberty, behavioral changes in children and resistance to chemotherapy treatments.
BPA reaches children beginning in the womb

Surveys by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found BPA in the bodies of nearly every person over the age of 6. In 2009, the Environmental Working Group detected BPA in 9 of 10 cord blood samples. Most of this contamination is believed to come from food packaging. BPA molecules leach into foods and beverage from plastic food containers and the epoxy linings of metal cans.

In 2009, under pressure from consumers, major manufacturers of hard, clear baby bottles, sippy cups and sports water bottles voluntarily switched to other plastics. The federal Food and Drug Administration barred BPA in baby bottles and children's cups in June 2012.

The FDA still allows BPA in food cans. EWG advises consumers to limit their consumption of canned products not made by those few companies that use non-BPA can linings.

In 2007, EWG found BPA in 53 of 97 canned foods tested. In 2011, FDA tests of 78 popular canned foods found the chemical in 71, or 90 percent. BPA concentrations in different cans of the same food vary dramatically, so it's impossible to draw definitive conclusions. A few canned foods sometimes measure high in BPA – beans, green beans, green peas and chili. Others, mainly fruits and beverages, tend to have low concentrations of BPA. (acidic canned tomato & sauce especially)

In 2011, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health determined that volunteers who ate a single serving of canned soup a day for five days had ten times the amount of BPA in their bodies as when they ate fresh soup daily. Campbell's and other major canned food makers are seeking alternatives but have not yet switched to BPA-free cans.

How to limit your family's exposure to BPA

Completely eliminating contact with BPA is virtually impossible, but you can reduce your family's exposure to this chemical.

    Canned food

    • Buy baby formula in plastic, glass or other non-metal containers. When possible, choose powdered formula because the packaging contains less BPA and because the powder is diluted with fresh water. If your baby needs liquid formula, look for brands sold in plastic or glass containers.
    • Limit your consumption of canned food, particularly if you are pregnant.
    • Look for canned food labeled as BPA-free or buy food packed in glass jars or waxed cardboard cartons. See EWG's report on which companies have cans lined with non-BPA alternatives.

    Hard plastic containers

Repurpose old baby bottles, cups, dishes and food containers marked with the letters "PC," for polycarbonate, or recycling label #7. Not all #7 products are polycarbonate, but they may be.

Do not microwave food in plastic containers.
    BPA in store receipts

EWG's tests of major retailers' store receipts, conducted in 2010, found that 40 percent were coated with BPA. The chemical can rub off on hands or food items. Some may be absorbed through the skin.
How to limit exposure to BPA in receipts

    • Say no to receipts when possible
    • Keep receipts in an envelope.
    • Never give a child a receipt to hold or play with.
    • Wash your hands before preparing and eating food after handling receipts.
    • Do not recycle receipts and other thermal paper. BPA residues will contaminate recycled pape
