Paul Closing the Gap with Romney

    From International Business Times:

The New Hampshire Republican primary of 2012 may be a competitive race after all. In a shocking new Suffolk University/7NEWS poll released on Sunday, Ron Paul surged to 20 percent while Romney dropped to 35 percent.

The differential between the two candidates has now shrunk to 15 percentage points.

Previously, political pundits have all but written off every single Republican candidate not named Mitt Romney in the New Hampshire primary of 2012.

Romney dominated the Granite State’s poll early, pulling in:

    41 percent on Jan. 1
    43 percent on Jan. 2
    43 percent on Tuesday
    43 percent on Wednesday
    41 percent on Thursday
    40 percent on Friday
    39 percent on Saturday

Paul, meanwhile, stayed in the teens while other candidates fared even worse.

Romney had the most money. He was the most credible anti-Obama candidate. He even scored the endorsement of 2008 rival John McCain, who won in New Hampshire that year…

A few days ago, it looked like New Hampshire might turn out to be a landslide victory for Romney and Paul would have to fight the war in South Carolina.

Now, it looks like the New Hampshire race may be a competitive one after all…

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, run neck-and-neck with President Obama in a general-election matchup, according to a new CBS News poll released late on Monday that shows the two front-runners in Tuesday's New Hampshire GOP primary running stronger against the president than their fellow Republicans.

Romney posts a two-point lead over Obama, 47 percent to 45 percent, within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. He leads Obama, 45 percent to 39 percent, among independent voters.

(CAMPAIGN 2012: Santorum Raises Polygamy in Defending Stand Against Gay Marriage)

Obama's lead over Paul is just one point, 46 percent to 45 percent, as Paul leads among independents by 7 points.

The president posts more significant leads over the other GOP candidates, but against each he is below the critical 50-percent threshold: He leads former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 49 percent to 41 percent; former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, 48 percent to 41 percent; Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 49 percent to 42 percent; and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., 47 percent to 43 percent.

    (ANALYSIS: Obamacare, Romneycare, Obamneycare--Never Mind)

Among all adults, just 45 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing as president, slightly worse than the 47-percent approval rating he posted last month. Among independents, 38 percent approve of Obama's job performance, while 49 percent disapprove.

Results released earlier Monday among Republicans who said they intend to vote in their state's presidential nominating contest showed Romney running slightly ahead of the rest of the field, but nearly a third of Republicans are undecided or seeking a candidate not currently in the race.

(CAMPAIGN 2012: Paul Calls South Carolina a 'Nice Test')

The CBS News poll was conducted Jan. 4-8, surveying 1,413 adults, for a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The poll includes a subsample of 1.247 registered voters.

Ron Paul running a solid second in New Hampshire

By Maria Recio | McClatchy Newspapers
    Maria Recio McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, is pushing for a strong second-place finish in Tuesday's primary in New Hampshire, where his Libertarian-style campaign seems to resonate with the state's independent-minded voters and young people.

The latest Suffolk University tracking poll, released Friday, puts Paul at 17 percent, behind runaway front-runner Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor who has a home in the Granite State and holds a strong lead with 40 percent.

But Paul's enthusiastic supporters say they expect a surge in the "Live Free or Die" state, home to the Libertarian Party's Free State Project, a movement to get thousands of people to move to New Hampshire from around the country beginning in 2004 to influence the political process.

"Many of the Republicans here are Libertarians," said Seth Cohn, a GOP state representative who moved to the Granite State in 2004 from Oregon as part of the Free State effort.

A Paul supporter, Cohn said, "I think it's a good state for him. I think he's about independence. He challenges the status quo on everything."

There's a special fondness for Paul among Libertarian-leaning voters because he was the party's presidential standard-bearer in 1988. Paul was a Republican congressman from Texas from the late 1970s until 1985, and he was elected again in 1996.

He's said he'll retire after this term and won't seek the Libertarian presidential nomination if he doesn't win the GOP nomination.

New Hampshire should give him a boost after his third-place Iowa caucus finish last week. Independents can vote in the Republican primary, which is significant in New Hampshire, where 40 percent of the electorate identifies as independent.

"Dr. Paul gets votes from both extremes of the New Hampshire electorate: Libertarians and young voters. I think he's at least going to double his performance from 2008," said Dante Scala, an associate professor of political science at the University of New Hampshire.

Paul had 8 percent of Granite State primary votes in 2008, but this election cycle has generated buzz for him with steady debate performances, edgy television ads attacking GOP rivals Newt Gingrich and Romney — blasting Gingrich for "serial hypocrisy" — and a beneath-the-radar Internet campaign fueled by college students.

"He's built his base of support. He's been a real presence," Scala said.

It's no accident that Paul's return to New Hampshire on Friday featured an evening appearance at the University of New Hampshire.

Paul, at 76 the oldest candidate in the race, has a feverish following among young voters, who communicate via Facebook for "meet-ups" around the state to promote the Texas lawmaker and create online "money bombs" to raise funds.

Recent reports that newsletters written under Paul's name in the 1980s and early '90s included racist and intolerant views — disavowed by Paul, who said he didn't write them — don't appear to have cut into his support.

Neal Conner, 25, a college student and computer technician who moved to New Hampshire from Sarasota, Fla., in 2009 as part of the Free State Project, plans to get up at 4 a.m. Tuesday as a ward captain for the local get-out-the-vote effort for Paul.

What's the Paul appeal? "The fact that he speaks his mind and speaks the truth," Conner said. "He's just refreshingly honest."

Supporters praise Paul's stance against the war in Afghanistan, as well as his civil libertarian views on drugs and personal behavior.

"Kids have a strong sense of right and wrong, where there's no gray area," said University of Maryland student Geoffrey Nye, who's 26.

Several Paul websites lit up last week over an opinion piece written by a nephew of GOP candidate and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum that endorsed Paul and blasted Santorum in the process.

"If you want another big-government politician who supports the status quo to run our country, you should vote for my uncle, Rick Santorum," said John Garver, Santorum's 19-year-old nephew, in The Daily Caller, an online conservative news site.

Santorum shrugged the slam as "a phase" and said he loved his nephew, who he said was the only one of his 35 nieces and nephews to support Paul.

Ron Paul New Hampshire Team Welcomes Additional ‘Small Businesses for Ron Paul’

Latest featured businesses located in Belknap, Carroll, Grafton, Hillsborough, Rockingham, and Sullivan counties

CONCORD, NH – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign announced today new members of its active “Small Businesses for Ron Paul” nationwide coalition. The new members conduct business in Belknap, Carroll, Grafton, Hillsborough, Rockingham, and Sullivan counties, all New Hampshire. Statements listed below were given by the new coalition members who agree with Dr. Paul’s prescription for achieving sustainable economic growth and lasting prosperity. This includes eliminating all unfunded mandates and removing unnecessary regulations on small businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as features of Ron Paul’s ambitious ‘Plan to Restore America.’

    Belknap County
Noah Weiner has been doing business for 10 years in Meredith on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, where he employs five people. Weiner states, “Dr. Paul is the only candidate that recognizes the seriousness of our situation and what needs to be done to put the power back in the hands of the people instead of conducting ‘business as usual.’ I have not found one fault with his proposed policies, cuts, and the like, and I support every decision he has made throughout his career.”

    Carroll County
Tim O’Keefe has operated a spray foam insulation company for about five years in Wolfeboro Falls, where he employs four people. O’Keefe said, “I believe Ron Paul is the only candidate with a real plan for America. He understands just how devastating excessive government regulations and heavy taxation are to a small business owner. I would trust no other candidate than Ron Paul to make this country, and my small business, prosper again.”

Deanna Vallely has been serving diners in Ossipee for six years, where she employs four people. She voiced her support for Dr. Paul because she “appreciates that he is a strict Constitutionalist, and he says what he thinks honestly and without reservations. I am excited that he has risen to the top tier.”

    Grafton County
Harry Stearns of Waterville Valley has been in the painting business for 30 years. He was first introduced to Congressman Paul by his teenage son, and said he felt an instant connection to the Congressman because his thoughts and beliefs are so similar to his. He said, “I was raised to live within my means, and truth and consistency do matter, even if it isn’t what you would like to hear.”

    Hillsborough County
Ed and Barbara Aichinger of Bedford have owned their business for 20 years, where they employ eight people. They said of the congressman, “Dr. Paul is the only candidate that has a clear understanding of the economy and he can get us out of this financial mess. He predicted it, he understands it, and he can lead us back to prosperity.”

Paul and Rita Harrington have operated their business in Nashua for over 25 years, with thousands of independent distributors and customers. They declared, “We strongly support Dr. Ron Paul for President for his unwavering dedication to our Constitution and Bill of Rights. He understands what the role of the federal government should be and will make sure to limit the overbearing departments like the FDA, EPA, etc. He knows the purpose of the Constitution is to limit the power of the federal government not the American people.”

Carol Karsten of Antrim operates an Alpaca farm with the help of part-time contractors, and has been in business since 1998. Karsten supports the Texas Congressman because of his message of personal liberty. “I have known a great deal about Dr. Paul from my family’s experience having been among his constituents. The most important thing about Dr. Paul for me is that of all the people running for the U.S. Presidency, he is the only principled patriot that has taken his sworn oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States seriously, and has weighed all his votes in Congress in accordance with our precious Constitution.” Karsten continued, “Dr. Paul is the only person running whose foreign policy stance reflects that of our founders and he is the only candidate that has voted against the Patriot Act and against the recently enacted NDAA that shreds our Fifth Amendment as completely as the Patriot Act shreds the Fourth. As the owner of a small farm who deals with the onslaught of federal and state regulation, I know Dr. Paul’s positions on personal liberty as well as personal property are very important to continuing our way of life in the United States, as we know.”

    Rockingham County
Consultant and entrepreneur Mark Carpenter voiced his enthusiastic support for Congressman Paul due to his strong support for his Constitutional views. In addition, he stated, “Ron Paul is Right. It’s the message that keeps coming to my lips at every turn.”

Dr. Christopher Suprock, of Exeter has been in business for four years in New Hampshire, where he hired three full-time employees. He articulated his support for Congressman Paul saying, “Dr. Paul is a scholar of economics and history. His solutions address the key failures of our government by returning respect for individual sovereignty and personal liberty. Paul courageously campaigns with a Libertarian philosophy of volunteerism, resourcefulness, and respect for ones’ neighbors. Respect for individual liberty also means we shouldn’t be so crass and manipulative with our international neighbors. The notion of blowback is real. Paul is the only candidate that recognizes the intimate connection between individual freedoms and the self-fulfilling dangers of an American empire.”

Sullivan County Tom Barton has been harvesting timber for four years from the Washington, New Hampshire area. Barton said of Dr. Paul, “I believe in constitutionally-limited government, economic freedom, individual liberty, personal responsibility, and a sane non-interventionist foreign policy. So does Dr. Paul.”

    Paul Most Electable Against Obama

    Reports National Journal (emphasis mine)

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, run neck-and-neck with President Obama in a general-election matchup, according to a new CBS News poll released late on Monday that shows the two front-runners in Tuesday’s New Hampshire GOP primary running stronger against the president than their fellow Republicans.

Romney posts a two-point lead over Obama, 47 percent to 45 percent, within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. He leads Obama, 45 percent to 39 percent, among independent voters.

Obama’s lead over Paul is just one point, 46 percent to 45 percent, as Paul leads among independents by 7 points.

The president posts more significant leads over the other GOP candidates, but against each he is below the critical 50-percent threshold: He leads former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 49 percent to 41 percent; former Utah Gov. Ron Paul in Statistical Dead Heat to Defeat Obama

New poll shows Texas Congressman within the margin of error to unseat incumbent President

    LAKE JACKSON, Texas
    – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul is in a statistical dead heat with President Obama, poised to unseat him in a hypothetical head-to-head contest, according to a new poll.

Paul in the poll garners 45 percent of the vote to Obama’s 46 percent, within the +/- 3 percent margin of error. Paul’s main competitor nationally, Mitt Romney, fares quite similarly against Obama earning 47 to 45 percent respectively, also within the margin of error. Paul’s fellow GOP aspirants Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, and Jon Huntsman all suffer defeats by margins beyond or well beyond the poll’s error margin.

Poll highlights include Paul handily besting Obama among independents by 47 to 40 percent, faring better among this key voter segment than presumed frontrunner Mitt Romney. In the case of all other GOP competitors, Obama wins the independent vote by percentage points at, within, or beyond the poll’s margin of error.

“We’ve called this contest a two-man race between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney, and this poll is further proof of that. It also demonstrates Ron Paul’s support among independents, an important voting segment within which our candidate is strong,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

The survey of 1,413 adults nationwide including 1,247 registered voters was conducted via telephone from January 4th to 8th.

Is CBS News Biased Against Ron Paul?

According to the latest Suffolk University poll Mitt Romney sits in first place with 33% in New Hampshire and Ron Paul is in second with 20%.

In a Suffolk University poll last week, Paul sat at only 14%, but he was still in second place–something you would not have known if you watched CBS News’ coverage of the NH polls last Thursday night. Here’s a snapshot of their television graphic:

In fact, the report did not even mention Paul’s name once during the entire segment. International Business Times has covered some of the inevitable backlash to this obvious snub.

When Congressman Paul becomes President Paul expect CBS News to focus its White House reporting on the Vice President and Secretary of State instead.

A RESPONSE TO JB WILLIAMS' ARTICLE ON RON PAUL

    By Timothy N. Baldwin, JD.
    January 10, 2012
    NewsWithViews.com

J.B. William’s article attacking Ron Paul, released on December 30, 2011 on NewsWithViews.com, perhaps deserves (I use the word loosely) a response. Williams’ assumes a lot and qualifies virtually nothing. He takes for granted the meaning and understanding of words like “conservative” and “liberal” and uses them to pigeon hole politics and pit people against Ron Paul. It is this kind of miniscule attention to detail that spreads misinformation and disinformation masqueraded as “fact.”

Let us consider Williams’ attacks on Ron Paul in order, and I will offer a critique for the sake of integrity in journalism and truth in politics.

    1. Williams says, “Ron Paul remains totally MIA (Missing In Action) on Obama’s Article II ineligibility, which disqualifies Obama for office and every member of congress, including Ron Paul!”

This is a useless tool against Ron Paul and benefits no voters. There is not one Republican candidate taking on this issue. One has to ask, what difference does it make that Ron Paul is not leading the charge in this regard? If no one is taking on this issue as a part of their campaign, then everyone’s score is “zero to zero.” Williams’ use of “fact” is a tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic jab at Ron Paul as a “constitutionalist.” But this jab can be made universally to all the candidates; thus, this information is useless and irrelevant to persuade the voters and distinguish the candidates.

    2. Williams says, “Mr. Constitution would know the primary function of the Federal Government is to protect and defend the United States against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic. – To do that in a 21st Century world, you better have one hell of a standing Military, which Mr. Constitution also opposes.”

Williams obviously mocks Ron Paul as “Mr. Constitution.” Williams steps outside of the objective and enters into the subjective and emotional. Williams’ credibility as an objective journalist diminishes significantly. We need less emotion in politics and more statesmanship. This mockery fails in that attempt.

As to Paul’s stance on defending the United States (while also supporting and defending the United States Constitution), Williams’ offers no support of his insinuation that Paul will fail at protecting the United States, and he offers no references as to what Paul’s plan is for the military and our entanglement in foreign affairs.

It is difficult to take journalism like this seriously when there is not one reference to a reliable source about Paul’s plan. Nor does Williams generate a comparative analysis of Paul’s plan versus the other candidate’s plan and how those plans conform to the constitution and to good policy as it relates to all of the factors affecting America right now (i.e. depressed economy, over-taxation, federal bureaucracies, unemployment, etc.). It amounts to, “ok, children, the sky is green because I say it’s green,” tautology.

    3. Williams says, “Obama likes running unopposed. He has won every political race by eliminating his opponents, leaving him unopposed in the general election.”

What Obama likes has nothing to do with Ron Paul’s positions and his viability as an opponent.

    4. William says, “Hillary Clinton was a lock for the DNC nomination in the 2008 primaries. Then the nobody from nowhere with a blank résumé and no birth certificate, stole the show. In the end analysis, the left always marches forward in lockstep, despite their many internal disputes. But the political right is more divided and scattered than ever in U.S. history, and they are no match for the unified international left that has already eliminated any real opposition for Obama in 2012.”

Williams makes an observation (“the political right is more divided and scattered than ever in U.S. history”) that offers a reality check about our political condition. Perhaps the reason for this so-called division is because the Democrat-Republican monopoly is finally starting to crumble and the people are getting sick of the same ol’ politics as usual.

Indeed, competition of ideas and real policy critique are resulting because of people like Ron Paul who are willing to think and act independently of political party. The spirit of independence was seen as a good thing in America, and political parties were seen as a potential hazard to that independence of thought. Attacking Ron Paul on these “divisive” grounds does little to convince the American who sees a problem with Democrat-Republican elitism corrupting what we want in leaders.

To Williams, marching in “lockstep” with the political party of choice is more important than one’s responsibility to the Supreme Law of the Land. Yet, for many people, Ron Paul’s breakup of the party monopoly is a long-awaited answer to prayer.
