arbeiter online - Boise State Student Newspaper:
Simcox enflames immigration debate
TABITHA KEILY AND SONIA TREVIZO

Issue date: 12/6/07 Section: News
Students listen to Minuteman Civil Defense Corps founder Chris Simcox lecture in the Student Union Lookout Room Tuesday evening. Some students and faculty wore red "N.O.T. on Our Campus" T-shirts and black masks in protest of Simcox's visit.
Approximately 200 people filled the Lookout Room at the Boise State Student Union Building Tuesday evening to hear Minuteman Civil Defense Corps founder Chris Simcox speak. Simcox was invited by the Boise State College Republicans to speak about his organization and its view on securing our borders. More than half of the audience wore red shirts symbolizing their protest to Simcox' message.
"We want to let him know that his hate speech is not welcome," Lucia Venegas said. Venegas, a Boise State graduate student in counseling said she feels his presence made some students feel unwelcome at BSU.
The animosity began before the speech even started. Faculty, students and community members gathered in the Cultural Center beforehand, where Student Union Director Jack Rahmann spoke to the protestors about rules concerning conduct at events held in the SUB. Despite disagreements interpreting these rules, the protestors quietly made their way to the Lookout Room. The protestors purposefully filled every other seat to accentuate their presence.
Simcox began by thanking the College Republicans for inviting him to tackle this controversial issue. "There seems to be growing friction and ethnic strife," Simcox said. He claims this is the result of government inaction. Simcox expressed that both Northern and Southern borders have security problems and that this is the fault of the U.S. government. "We challenge federal authorities to do their job," Simcox said. "We are leading a reform movement." The organization was founded in October 2002 to address the issue of illegal entry to the United States. There are 117 chapters across the nation and 10,000 volunteers.

Simcox emphasized that some groups of the Minuteman split from the original organization; he apologized for their extreme rhetoric and stressed this is not what he represents. "I admire the messages on your shirts," Simcox said to the protestors. "No human is illegal, no oppression should be tolerated in our country." The shirts worn by the protestors were purchased by the Associated Students of BSU for the event "No Oppression Tolerated," held last spring. Many of the protestors added additional messages to their shirts such as, "BSU is too great for hate," and "Take your hate and get off our campus."
"This issue is out of control," Simcox said of illegal immigration. He claimed the solution was simple: to secure our borders. The protestors remained relatively calm throughout the majority of Simcox' speech. However his closing statement, a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, sparked outrage among the protestors while his supporters gave him a standing ovation. "We have room for one flag in this nation: the American flag. We have room for one language: the English language," Simcox concluded.
The floor was then opened for a question-and-answer session that turned into a heated debate between the protestors and Simcox' supporters. It came to a chaotic close when the majority of the protestors stood up and left chanting, "Si se puede!" (Yes it can be done!). Fernando Mejia, a Boise State student, said the protestors wanted to portray the message that immigration is an American experience. "[Simcox] wants to unify people but he's actually dividing them," Mejia said. "I think he is clearly misinformed."
Outgoing College Republican President Jonathan Sawmiller said the student club brought Simcox to Boise State because he has first-hand knowledge of what the situation at the borders is like. He added that he thought the protestors were disrespectful and had an immature attitude toward the speech. "We should be able to come together in an academic environment and discuss this," Sawmiller said.
The incoming College Republican President Trevor Grigg was in agreement with Sawmiller. "I honestly felt the hate in the room and that's not what we want to do," Grigg said. He said he was disappointed with how both sides handled the situation. "The College Republicans are not a hate group," Grigg said. He said he wants to fix the reputation the group has and build positive relationships with other groups on campus.

The people protesting Simcox's speech were there, admirably, showing their side of the issue. I was disappointed that there was some heckling, which I feel is disrespectful, but that's not really the point.
The point is that those angry with illegal immigration should be mad at economics, not the immigrants. This creates needless cultural strife, as Simcox pointed out. Simcox seemed to be a genuine guy. But the theme underlying his movement is negative: why try to stop people from coming here? Why not instead help improve the situation in their countries? This would be a better way to spend our time - doing something inherently positive, instead of negative.
People want to better their lives. If opportunities in their country are scarce, they go somewhere with better opportunities.
Humans are humans. Borders are imaginary. And honestly, I don't mind having to press one for English if that means a person can live a better life.

I was at the speech and was surprised to hear about how the Minuteman actually rescued 326 foreign nationals who would have died in the desert otherwise. None of the haters said anything about that...

Thank you College Republicans for having the nerve to bring someone to campus to tell the truth about what goes on at the border. Chris Simcox is a true patriot. Americans have always had one flag and one language that bind them together, and no PC crap will ever change that fact. The only racism and hatred at the event came from the red-shirted, black-masked, thugs shouting racial slogans in Spanish. Just so you know, this is America, not "Atzlan!" Loyalty of true Americans lies with America, not "La Raza!"

The title of the article, Simcox enflames immigration debate, displays the pro-illegal alien and liberal bias of your newspaper. Simcox was there to discuss the issue, and to provide solutions. Only left wingers and members of Hispanic supremacist groups like mecha and la raza could view anything Simcox has said as inflammatory or racist.

However you view his opinions, or the opinions of the protesters, the fact that it was brought to campus and aired in public is a step in the right direction. Without dialogue and debate people only hear what others tell them, believe one side of an arguement, shut off there minds to the reasons behind the problems we face in todays society.
I am a foriegn national. I immigrated from the UK nearly three years ago now. It cost my wife and I tens of thousands of dollars to get everything done legally and in accordance with government guidelines... it also took over a year just to get me into this country. My wife also had to bear all financial responsibility for me because i could not work until i obtained a social security number. In a few months time I have to renew my permanent residency and was shocked to find out that the cost has increased threefold in the last two years... On further investigation all of the other costs have increased a similar amount as well. For what? They are pieces of paper for crying out loud, does it really take that much of someones time to justify this increase... all they have done is to make the legal immigration process even more unaffordable to many that want or need to come here. I agree with Mr Simcox to the degree that something needs to be done, and that it is the governments fault. Extremist views from either direction I do not agree with... but the government of this great country that I now call home, and would fight and die to protect, needs to seriously look at the possible solutions to this problem... and making it easier and more affordable would be a good start.
They could still say "no" to applicant, which may cause some to seek "illegal" ways to enter this country. But it would stop a large majority from taking "illegal" measures to enter this country in the first place.

I heard those racial slogans...
"why don't you walk back to mexico"... While another looked at John Sawmiller and asked if he "brought his taser"
There were haters there... non of them wore red shirts.
Poor John... your last event really sucked.
Ohh..
and did anyone catch how simcox said...
"nobody is illegal... and no oppression should be tolerated"
which he followed with slides about the number of "illegals" crossing the border. If he was going to leave his spine at the door, the least he could have done was leave his contradictory slide show next to it.

I was there at the speech and I was very disappointed on the behavior of some. Laughing and talking during the speech are just a few examples. I understand if you do not agree with the speaker but the behaviour shows disprespect not only to the speaker but those who were there to geniunely listen. Those in opposition became down right rude during the Q&A session when they were talking over and interupting EACH OTHER. Instead of raising a hand and waiting to be called on, they would just stand up and start a little speech of their own, ignoring those who had raised their hand and were patiently waiting to be called upon.
It was a very tense atmosphere and not because of those supporting Simcox. The opposition would be yelling during the Q&A session and began calling names. the gentleman who asked the 2nd or 3rd questions, called the College Republicans "jack boot thugs" who want "ethnic cleansing". Toward the end of Q&A, a BSU staffer called supporters of Smicox racists.
I did find it interesting that in this article they said the protesters walked orderly to the Lookout Room. I was in the area and a slight jog is not what I would call oderly.

From what I know about the Minuteman, these folks are nothing more than an armed Neighborhood Watch Group. Armed, because the events on the border which does not get any media time, provide the need to protect ones-self. When people dressed as military officers frequently come across the southern border escorting drug runners and brandishing 50 cal guns, then yes, to be armed to make sure you are safe is a good thing when you're down there near the border. To date, there are still 21 US citizens that have been kidnapped and taken over the border - yes, most of them are of Hispanic heritage, but they are still US citizens - where's the outcry - where's the media?!
We have laws for a reason - you don't like it, ok get the laws changed. Until then, abide by our laws!
Until our own govt. gets up and enforces the laws we have now - nothing will be able to be done about illegals coming here, demanding services, demanding handouts, demanding that the legal citizens of this country accept their customs, and their language, just because they are here. A fence is a good start, but until the govt. actively fines the tar out of the businesses that hire these workers, they will continue to come here. And I don't believe this is an economics issue, this is a corporate greed issue.
Lastly, I am greatly disheartened at the activities of those supported and organized by their BSU teachers wearing certain clothes and brandishing masks, obviously planted there by their organizations (I wonder if they got extra-credit for looking like that?). I would have thought most there were really adults - guess I was wrong again.
This is the United States of America. This is not Mexico, and this is not Sweden. If your home country is so bad - go back and dang it, you take it back! We did in 1776, you can do the same! If you came to this country and won't swear loyalty to OUR country - then you are NO American, no matter what your heritage is.

I've had spite towards college Republicans due to having read about all their hate-based event initiatives, and tendency to invite antagonizers, whether they've been homophobic, or islamophobic, or xenophobic related.
But based on what they said in the clip and article, I've gained a bit more respect...

I just saw the video clip -
The arbiter spend over 4 mins to interview some girl, spewing open borders and tolerance to those that come here through "criminal" means, and then spends only 1 minute with a guy who supports the speaker?

I don't know what some of you folks are breathing there in Idaho, but it is definitely tainted!
I personally know Mr. Simcox, and have been a member of his organization for about 2 years now. I belong to the California chapter of MCDC and we have over 1800 members who have passed very rigorous background checks, and also have undergone various levels of vetting from members who are specialized in filtering out anybody who has any type of HATE agenda.
I have spent thousands of hours on the California – Mexico border with hundreds of these fine people, and I personally can state factual that there are absolutely NO members of our group who are racists or want to do harm to anyone who crosses the borders illegally! We are at the border to 1. Observe, Report & Record any unlawful activity in our areas of field operations.
Our members come from all nationalities, religions, races and backgrounds to help us secure the borders from those people who are determined to break the laws of the United States of America by entering here illegally or by human trafficking or drug smuggling.
Every year I get 2 vanloads of students from the University of Michigan-YMCA who make the 2,000-mile trip to come down to see first hand what goes on at the border. These young people want a first hand view of what is going on, and want to be educated by seeing for themselves what a mess this area is in. To my surprise when they leave everyone of them have been astonished by how the media portrays the issue of border security (Or the lack thereof).
Maybe it is time for some of you who think we should just open the door, and pick the laws we want to enforce actually put your rear ends on the border! That is if you could take the heat and cold and the withdrawal from your Nintendo games!
Those who call Mr. Simcox's group these obscured names and who claim they have researched his background, and have read his book, and who have seen his website and the "Hate" that he portrays don't have a clue about what we do, or who we are! You are so far out in some parallel universe I doubt there is any hope for you.
I once was a bleeding heart liberal, actually I still am a liberal, but I want the rule of law enforced in my country! I want local communities to have local neighbourhood watches, and I want private citizens to report illegal behaviour to law enforcement, and I don't want to be called a racist when I believe in these things!
This is not about IMMIGRATION! It is about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION & DRUG TRAFFICKING & HUMMAN TRAFFICKING AND the security of our nation PEOPLE, GET IT? We all want all immigrants here; we just want people to come in thru the front door!

Anytime anybody shows up at a protest in a mask I am always reminded of the KKK, you know the white sheeted yellow bellies? How did Lucia Venegas know it was "Hate Speach" befor he said anything?
Anyone know how many people immigrated in to the US last year?
In 2006, a total of 1,266,264 immigrants became legal permanent residents of the United States
If 1.2 Million can do it so can everybody else. You want to help the poor and down trodden? Good for you! Work to get MORE people to work WITH the Government to help bring in people LEGALLY. I know that's not as much fun and you don't feel like a "Rebel with out a Clue" and it's probably hard work, but do try. Here's an idea why don't you do something to IMPROVE Mexico? That way no one has to take a long walk.
By the way; when some clown comes across the Boarder with 6 kilos of Botulism Toxin in a back pack, a map to LAX ,along with a burning desire to be die for his cause, what are you going to say then? "Well yes we do have 40,00 dead ,but at lest no one was profiled "?

WHOEVER WROTE THIS ARTICLE HAS IT BACKWARDS. MR. SIMCOX DID NOT ENFLAME ANYONE OR ANYTHING. HE SPOKE PEACEFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY. HOWEVER, THE "RED SHIRTS" WHO CAME TO CAUSE TROUBLE WERE THE "ENFLAMING ONES" - THEY WORE THE "ENFLAMING COLOR" (RED) AND DONNED "ENFLAMING" INDUMENTARY (MASKS) TO HIDE THEMSELVES SO THEY COULD "ENFLAME" THE SITUATION WHEN THEY DEEMED IT CONVENIENT AND WERE READY TO "ENFLAME THE WHOLE PEACEFUL PROCESS TO GET WHAT THEY WANT: TO LEGALIZE THAT WHICH IS ILLEGAL (ILLEGAL ALIENS)! MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO HIRE WRITERS WHO ARE NOT BIASED FOR A CHANGE! THE PUBLIC REALLY GETS T-ED OFF AT SUCH BLATANT LIES! AND BY THE WAY, THERE IS A MEXICAN RADICAL SUBVERSIVE GROUP KNOWN AS AZTLAN (WITH THEIR SCHOOL BRANCH KNOWN AS (MECHA") THAT PLANS TO TAKE OVER FIRST THE SOUTHWEST OF THIS NATION AND THEN THE WHOLE U.S.A. IF THEY CAN PULL IT OFF. THEY GO TO THESE TALKS TO MAKE TROUBLE, I TRULY BELIEVE, SO THEY CAN CALL EVERYONE "RACIST" WHEN "THEY" (AZTLAN/MECHA) ARE THE REAL RACISTS AND HATE THE "GRINGO". MECHA'S CONSTITUTION STATES THEIR GOAL AS THE "LIBERATION OF AZTLAN!" MEXICO, BY THE WAY, ONLY OWNED THE SW OF THE U.S. FOR 24 YEARS BUT THEY THINK IT IS THEIRS!

They aren't just biting the hand that feeds them....they want the whole enchillada! It's impossible to have any reasonable debate with the OBL marxists. It's really very simple...we have existing immigration laws but, being a lawless society, Mexico chooses to ignore our right to enforce those laws. And so does our government! There will be a day of reckoning...soon!

Since WHEN do ONLY NON-whites COUNT when it comes to issues such as ILLEGAL immigration! Since WHEN do ONLY NON-whites HAVE the FACTS on ANY issue?! And since WHEN are ONLY WHITES guilty of VIOLENCE on ANY issue?! It seems that Professor Marcy Newman is BENT on REVENGE against WHITES by insisting that whites be EXCLUDED from the immigration debate! The REAL truth is, this professor is a racist HERSELF!
