Being President is Tough; Being Incompetent Doesn’t Help

The President is down 10 overall. On specific issues, he doesn’t ever get that close.

Being President is Tough; Being Incompetent Doesn’t Help

Posted by Michael Becker on Jul 28, 2014 in 2014 Mid-Term, Politics

Being President has tons of perks. Like being able to play golf any time you want to. Like going on vacation and not having to pay for it, any time you want. If you’re a Democrat, you get absolute cover from the press. There’s more, but you get the idea. There’s also a fundamental problem being President when you’re just not very bright and you’re incompetent. There comes a time when even the press can’t cover for you anymore.

President Obama got a pass running up to the 2012 elections. He wasn’t held accountable for Fast & Furious and the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. He got a pass on the terrorist attack in Benghazi that cost the lives of a US ambassador and three other US citizens. He got a pass on the worst recovery in history and the fact that there are fewer Americans working today than when he took office. He got a pass on the fact that his foreign policy is a raging disaster and the world is a significantly more dangerous place than when he took office.

It looks like the days of “Get out of jail FREE” cards may be just about over for President Obama though.

Anderson Robbins and Shaw & Company did a poll for Fox News the results don’t reflect well on the President. The first thing to know about the poll is that it is Registered Voters not Likely Voters, and typically RV lean much farther to the left than LV. Here’s the overall polling results.

The president has a 52% disapproval rating. His all-time worst was in March at 54%. The interesting note about the two polls, today’s and the March poll, is that today’s poll is 43/35/18 D/R/I while the March poll was 40/34/23. There is no rational reason to move the sample from Independents to Democrats by five points. To us, that would indicate that the President is more likely at his all time low point.

Next up, are the issues. President Obama’s overall numbers look pretty good when you stack them up against his numbers on the most critical issues of the day.

The President is down 10 overall. On specific issues, he doesn’t ever get that close.

On ObamaCare, the President’s signature issue, he’s down 13.

On the economy, which he keeps touting, he’s down 17.

On foreign policy, an issue he campaigned on with “Smart Diplomacy” he’s down an even 20. Good job Hillary, good job Jon Cary. As a side note, this will haunt Hillary Clinton who, if she runs, will peak in the polls on the day she announces.

On immigration, and we should say “amnesty” he’s down 24. Are you paying attention John Boehner? Probably not.

And, on the current shooting war in the middle east, he’s down 27.

Another stellar performance for Mr Ketchup Boy!

    Not good.

The overly Democrat sample of just-registered not-likely voters also reported President “The Oceans Will Stop Rising” to be dishonest and untrustworthy, and, they reported that the President’s administration is not transparent by a 40 point margin. 40 points. Icky.

The President has been faced with low and falling poll numbers before.

What he hasn’t been faced with before is a public that doesn’t agree with his major policies in a big way, and an increasingly hostile press. This doesn’t bode well for President Obama and the Democrats in general facing the November election.

    A Question of Competence

How bad does it have to be for the American people to doubt the competence of this administration?
If you will recall, a recent Fox New poll found that a plurality of Americans believe the Obama administration to be less competent than his predecessors, including George W. Bush's administration.
A brand new CNN poll found similar results. When asked if Obama “can manage the government effectively,” 57% of Americans say he cannot.
Then we have polls showing that voters would elect Mitt Romney over Barack Obama if the presidential election was held today.
And we have articles being written about Obama already being a lame duck president.
You know things are bad when Obama loses the Washington Post. Chris Cillizza writes, “President Obama’s competence problem is worse than it looks.” He says that this issue of competence is going to hurt Democrats going into the midterm election.
By virtually every measure, Barack Obama has failed to execute effectively. From the economy to foreign policy, there is virtually no issue where Obama's team can claim success. Then add onto this the scandals that have emerged and the humanitarian crisis on our border. It's hard to imagine how an effective government could allow for tens of thousands of illegals to come across our border and deal with the situation so poorly.
But it's not just Obama who is hurting his administration's competency and credibility. John Kerry is also doing a bang-up job. Kerry was sent to help facilitate a ceasefire in Gaza. But his efforts have been described as “misinformed,” “unfair,” “naive,” “wreckage,” “a big blunder” and “a significant mistake.” You can read this Washington Post piece which describes how Kerry blew it.
As a Times of Israel writer put it, “Despite the tendency to criticize US Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts, credit should be given where credit is due. Over the weekend, Kerry did manage to facilitate something in the Middle East: unparalleled unanimity. Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan were all in agreement that Kerry’s efforts were undermining the attempt to bring about a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as quickly as possible.”
Kerry, similar to Obama in his hubris, thought that he could just go over there and achieve a quick diplomatic end to this situation. Obviously it's not that simple, and his tone deaf efforts to help find an appropriate solution have left Israelis feeling as though the American government has taken the side of Hamas, Qatar and Turkey.

The incompetence is astounding and left our closest ally wondering where we stand at a time of significant peril. Criticism has been so heated that the White House and the State Department have been forced to publicly defend Kerry.
Why does this administration and most of the world seem to lack moral clarity on this issue? Hamas started this. Israel is protecting itself. Considering that the destruction of Israel is in Hamas' charter, the only way this can be solved longterm is to make sure that Hamas does not have the capability – whether its rockets or infrastructure or tunnels – to attack Israel again.
As former US Israeli ambassador Michael Oren said in the Washington Post, “Israel must be permitted to crush Hamas.” He goes on to explain how in order to guarantee peace, “this war must be given a chance.”
“The cycle can end, now and decisively. As Operation Protective Edge enters its third week , responsible world leaders can give Israel the time and the leverage it needs to alter Hamas’s calculus. They can let the Israeli army ferret Hamas out of its holes and make it pay a prohibitive cost for its attacks. They can create an outcome in which the organization, even if it remains in Gaza, is defanged and deprived of its heavy arms. Of course, Hamas will resist demilitarization, and more civilians will suffer, but by ending the cycle once and for all thousands of innocent lives will be saved.”
A short-term ceasefire may be politically expedient for Barack Obama's administration, but it may not be in the best interest of our ally Israel. That's for them to decide, and our naïve approach to “fixing” this current situation has made us look foolish on the world stage once again.

NAPOLITANO: Is the president incompetent or lawless?

Neither offers Americans much prospect for hope

It has been well established under the Constitution and throughout our history that the president’s job as the chief federal law enforcement officer permits him to put his ideological stamp on the nature of the work done by the executive branch. The courts have characterized this stamp as “discretion.”
Thus, when exercising their discretion, some presidents veer toward authority, others toward freedom. John Adams prosecuted a congressman whose criticism brought him into disrepute, an act protected by the First Amendment yet punishable under the Alien and Sedition Acts, and Thomas Jefferson declined to enforce the acts because they punished speech, and pardoned all those convicted. Jimmy Carter asserted vast federal regulatory authority over the trucking and airline industries, and Ronald Reagan undid nearly all of it.
The president has discretion to adapt law enforcement to the needs of the times and to his reading of the wishes of the American people. Yet that discretion has a serious and mandatory guiding light; namely, that the president will do so faithfully.
The word “faithfully” appears in the oath of office that is administered to every president. The reason for its use is to assure Americans that their wishes for government behavior, as manifested in written law, would be carried out even if the president personally disagrees with the laws he swore to enforce.
This has not always worked as planned. President George W. Bush once famously signed into law a statute prohibiting federal agents without a search warrant from reading mail sent to persons other than themselves — and as he was literally holding his pen, he stated he had no intention of enforcing it. That was a rejection of his presidential duties and a violation of his oath.
Today, however, President Obama has taken the concept of discretion and so distorted it, and has taken the obligation of faithful enforcement and so rejected it, that his job as chief law enforcer has become one of incompetent madness or chief lawbreaker. Time after time, in areas as disparate as civil liberties, immigration, foreign affairs and health care, the president has demonstrated a propensity for rejecting his oath and doing damage to our fabric of liberty that cannot easily be undone by a successor.
He has permitted unconstitutional and unbridled spying on all Americans all the time, and he has dispatched his agents to lie and mislead the American people and their elected representatives in Congress about it. This has resulted in a federal culture in which the supposed servants of the people have become our permanent and intimate monitors and squealers on what they observe.
He has permitted illegal immigrants to remain here and continue to break the law, and he has instructed them on how to get away with it. His encouragement has resulted in the flood of tens of thousands of foreign unaccompanied children being pushed across our borders. This has resulted in culture shock to children now used as political pawns, the impairment of their lives and the imposition of grievous financial burdens upon local and state governments.
His agents fomented a revolution in Libya that resulted in the slaying of that country’s leader, the killing of the U.S. ambassador and the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy. His agents fomented a revolution in Ukraine that resulted in a Russian invasion, an active insurgency, sham elections and the killing of hundreds of innocent passengers flying on a commercial airliner.
He has dispatched CIA agents to fight undeclared and secret wars in Yemen and in Pakistan, and he has dispatched unmanned drones to kill innocents there. He has boasted that some secret reading of public positive law permits him to kill whomever he wishes, even Americans and their children.
His State Department has treated Hamas — a gang of ruthless killers whose stated purpose is the destruction of Israel — as though it were a legitimate state deserving of diplomatic niceties, and this has encouraged Hamas to persist in attacking our only serious ally in the Middle East.
His Department of Veterans Affairs has so neglected patients in government hospitals that many of them died, and it even destroyed records to hide its misdeeds. His Internal Revenue Service has enforced the law more heavily against his political opponents than against his friends, and it has destroyed government computer records in order to hide its misdeeds.
He has relieved his friends of the burdens of timely compliance with Obamacare, and he has burdened his enemies with tortured interpretations of that law — even interpretations that were rejected by the very Congress that enacted the law and interpretations that were invalidated by the Supreme Court.
He has done all these things with a cool indifference, and he has threatened to continue to do so until the pressure builds on his political opponents to see things his way.
The Framers could not have intended a president so devoid of fidelity to the rule of law that it is nearly impossible to distinguish between incompetence and lawlessness — and I am not sure which is worse. Archbishop Fulton Sheen often said he’d prefer to deal with a smart devil than a stupid one.
The Framers did give us a remedy, though, and the remedy is not a frivolous lawsuit that the federal courts will no doubt reject as a political stunt. The remedy is removal from office. This is not to be undertaken lightly, as was the case when this remedy was last used. It is the remaining constitutional means to save the freedoms the Constitution was intended to guarantee.
The choice is between two more years of government by decree or two years of prosecution. It is a choice the president has imposed upon us all.
Andrew P. Napolitano, a former judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, is an analyst for the Fox News Channel. He has written seven books on the U.S. Constitution.
