Poll: 62 Percent Now 'Dislike' President Obama's Policies
Poll: 62 Percent Now 'Dislike' President Obama's Policies
Guy Benson | Jan 24, 2014
Fox News is out with its first national poll of 2014, and the results don't look much sunnier for the president than they did in late December. They also track relatively closely with Quinnipiac's data released yesterday. The notable takeaways -- from economic priorities, to hot-button social issues, to the president's likeability:
(1) Obama's overall job approval is (42/53), virtually unchanged from last month (he was at 40/54 in the new Q-poll). His approval rating sits at (35/57) among independents.
(2) On policy, the president is upside down on virtually every issue polled: (-21) on the economy, (-38) on deficits, (-18) on immigration, (-21) on healthcare, (-22) on gun control, (-18) on Iran, and (-13) on income inequality, his pet issue. More on that in a moment.
(3) Fully 62 percent of respondents say they "dislike" Obama's policies. Less than one-third said they like both him personally and his policies. Conservatives should also take note that relatively few Americans (33 percent) say they dislike the president on a personal level.
(4) The president will focus heavily on income inequality in his State of the Union address next week. This problem is overstated according to the data, but has gotten worse on his watch. Moreover, it's not a top economic concern for Americans. On that question, 40 percent cited jobs and unemployment as their priority, while nearly as many (36 percent) cited government spending and deficits. Just 12 percent cited income inequality. Nearly three-quarters of Americans say they still feel as if the US economy is in a recession. It's technically well into its fifth year of recover -- but ordinary people's perceptions are understandable given outcomes like this.
(5) Respondents favor a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants (68 percent), support raising the federal minimum wage (56 percent), and are glad that the recent NSA revelations came to light (68 percent). Sixty-two percent say unemployment benefits shouldn't last longer than one year, as a majority (55 percent) believe the program discourages job seeking. Seventy-three percent say they don't believe the government should get involved to deal with the issue of some people making much more money than others. Just 12 percent say wealth is a zero-sum proposition.
(6) On social issues, the public is evenly split on same-sex marriage (47/47), favors legalizing marijuana by a seven-point margin, and considers itself more "pro-life" (48 percent) than "pro-choice" (45 percent) on abortion. Voters under the age of 35 are by far the most likely cohort to favor gay marriage and marijuana legalization, supporting each idea by roughly a two-to-one margin. This group also self-identifies as pro-life on abortion by an eight-point margin. Voters 35-54 are the most pro-choice demographic. More women choose the pro-life side than the pro-choice side (48/46). These outcomes may seem counter-intuitive in light of the media's preferred narrative, but shouldn't surprise anyone who read my post on abortion polling yesterday.
Finally, if you think a re-elected president's job approval numbers aren't politically significant, think again.

63% Of Americans Say "Divided" & "Troubled" America Is On The Wrong Track
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 01/28/2014 14:15 -0500
President Obama will proclaim that all is well but more is to be done tonight (we suspect) and lay out his agenda for fixing it all now (which we are sure will be different from the fixes of the last 5 years). However, as The WSJ reports, he faces a nation increasingly worried about his abilities, dissatisfied with the economy and fearful of the economy's future. Since the rise of modern polling in the 1930s, only George W. Bush has begun his sixth year in the White House on rockier ground than Mr. Obama. 59% are uncertain, worried, or pessimistic about the rest of Obama's term; 63% believe the US in on the wrong track; and, despite record high stock prices and 'wealth', 71% expressed some level of dissatisfaction with the broader economy.
Via WSJ,
Concerns abound...
The survey found that just over half of Americans disapprove of the president's job performance, with 43% approving, a trough that remains little changed since the early summer. Nearly six in 10 say they are uncertain, worried or pessimistic about what he will do with the remainder of his presidency. Disapproval for Congress, too, is near its all-time high.
Americans are generally satisfied with their own personal economic situation, and gauges of consumer confidence remain strong. But that optimism hasn't translated into strong confidence in the broader economy or the president. In the Journal poll, 61% of respondents said they were satisfied with their own financial situation, but 71% expressed some level of dissatisfaction with the broader economy.
Mr. Obama's low approval numbers spell trouble for congressional Democrats heading into midterm elections this November. Such contests are historically challenging to the party of incumbent presidents.

CNN Poll: 67% Oppose Obama’s Executive Agenda
Clear majority of State of the Union viewers want Obama to work with Congress

A CNN/ORC poll of viewers who watched last night’s State of the Union address found that 67% oppose Barack Obama’s plan to pursue his political agenda via executive orders.During his speech last night, Obama unveiled a raft of executive orders and also promised to enact gun control measures “with or without Congress.”However, viewers reacted negatively to Obama’s plan to bypass lawmakers. They were asked, “In general, would you rather see Barack Obama attempt to reach a bipartisan compromise with Congress on major issues, or would you rather see Obama take unilateral action without Congress to make changes in government policy that are not supported by Republicans?”Just 30% said they want Obama to take unilateral action, with 67% opposing his executive agenda, which U.S. House Rep. Randy Weber last night described as the behavior of a “socialist dictator”.Despite the Huffington Post spinning the poll as a “positive” reaction to Obama’s speech, the numbers show otherwise. In all three reaction categories, positive, very positive and negative, Obama performed worse than any of his previous four State of the Union speeches. Obama’s “total positive” figure of 76% was the worst return for the last 14 years besides George W. Bush’s 2006 figure of 75%.CNN was a little more honest, reporting that reaction to Obama’s speech was “less positive than previous years.”The poll also showed that less Americans than ever before during Obama’s tenure are confident that his economic plan will succeed. In 2009, 80% of respondents thought Obama’s policies would improve the economy compared to just 59% after last night’s address.Although still a majority, fewer Americans than ever before following an Obama State of the Union speech believe that Obama’s policies will move the country in the “right direction”.Meanwhile, a clever new viral ad by the American Action Network released just before last night’s speech depicts Obama as an empty suit making hollow promises.
