Plans for border wall increasing demand
PENITAS - Police say human smugglers are making more money because of the expected construction of the border wall.
Penitas Police Chief David Harris says the demand is greater and smugglers are trying to cross over larger groups.
A new trend officers are reporting is the use of large, white vans. Police chased three vans full of illegals this morning.
Harris says the vans fit more people, which means more money for the smuggler.
We're told one group of illegals caught this morning paid $2,500 each to cross into the U.S.
The police chief says he spoke to the illegals inside this van. They told him life is rough back home, and to them, the risk is worth it.
"They will do whatever it takes, even if they have to die to get over here," he says.
The police chief tells us officers expect more of these pursuits, as we come closer to having a border wall.

What took them so long to come to the van conclusion....it has been evident for months and months.
