(Monday, February 09, 2009)

San Clemente, Calif. - Two men were detained last week at the San Clemente, Calif. Border Patrol checkpoint for a suspected connection to an armed robbery.

Agents encountered the suspects as they arrived at the checkpoint in a Cadillac sedan last Wednesday afternoon. According to agents, the men appeared uneasy during the inspection, causing the vehicle to be referred to secondary inspection. The driver allowed agents to search the interior of the vehicle, where agents found a small amount of marijuana and methamphetamine, along with drug paraphernalia.

Agents suspected that the two men were involved in a possible armed robbery when they discovered the men were in possession of a large amount of cash, and found inside the vehicle a handwritten demand note and broken videocassette tape.

The men were later turned over, with the possible evidence, to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation. The subjects were subsequently charged with the robbery of a Rite Aid in San Diego, and are also prime suspects in another robbery that took place last week.
