Town replaces officers charged with cover-up in immigrant's beating death

SHENANDOAH (AP) — An eastern Pennsylvania town has hired eight part-time police officers to replace four full-timers that resigned amid a corruption scandal.

Officials in Shenandoah hired the eight officers on Monday. Shenandoah's police department has been operating with three full-time officers after the others resigned in December.

Former police Chief Matthew Nestor and two others are charged with obstructing the investigation into the fatal beating of a Mexican immigrant in July 2008. Federal investigators say they orchestrated a cover-up that protected high school football players involved in the death of Luis Ramirez.

Nestor and another officer are also charged with extortion and demanding money from a businessman in return for releasing him from custody.
