The City Council on Tuesday night voted unanimously to join the federal program that verifies if new city employees or contract workers can legally work in the United States.

Beginning July 1, Placentia will clear all new hires through E-Verify, which compares an I-9 employment eligibility form to information on a database of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

The verification checks must be completed within an employee's first three days on the job. New employees receiving non-conformation status through E-Verify will be terminated, according to a City Council report.

Companies applying for contracts above $50,000 also are required to run their employees through this program.

"I'm happy we are doing what we can to insure that the residents and U.S. citizens are protected," Councilman Chad Wanke said. "It is really just insuring that we protect legal citizens' rights to work."

More than 10 Orange County cities already use E-Verify including Brea, Buena Park, La Habra, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Orange, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Santa Ana.
