Immigration officials contacted after man crashes into church

DAVIDSON

A 29-year-old illegal immigrant faces numerous charges, including driving while impaired, after crashing in front of a Davidson church on Sunday, a town official said. Davidson police spokeswoman Sara-Lynne Levine said Jose-Juan Castro Turubiartes registered a 0.15 percent blood-alcohol level five hours after being arrested. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.Turubiartes also faces charges of resisting a public officer, failure to report an accident, reckless driving and driving without a license.

Levine said the man also had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, including one for a past DWI.

No bystanders were injured when Turubiartes' SUV jumped a curb and landed upside down in the middle of South Main Street. Turubiartes climbed from the vehicle and ran, but was apprehended by two church members.

Levine said Davidson police were not sure of his country of origin.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service was contacted, Levine said.

Turubiartes and another occupant in his vehicle were treated and released with minor injuries.

He is currently being held in Mecklenburg County Jail on $20,000 bond. -- Dan tierney
