Scholars from UCLA and UC Berkeley to speak Feb. 5 as part of UC MEXUS Series
UC MEXUS continues its series of seminars on topics relevant to Mexico and California

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucmexus.ucr.edu) – Three researchers will discuss migration into and out of Mexico as well the effect of international capital in Mexico City at 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5, at UC Riverside.

“Globalization, identity politics and transnational communities,” features new research by scholars from UCLA and UC Berkeley.

• Guadalupe Adriana Cruz Manjárrez García, from the UCLA Department of Culture and Performance, probes the formation of immigrant identity in the context of transnationalism. How does migration affect what it means to be "Zapotec" both for those remaining in Mexico and those in California?
• Camila Pastor, from the UCLA Department of Anthropology, examines how an elite transnational population (Lebanese-Mexicans) practices class and status within different national contexts (Lebanon and Mexico).
• Maria Moreno, from the UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning, looks at the conflict created by government efforts to attract capital from abroad by investing in huge projects in Mexico City that are at odds with local and regional values and priorities.

This is the fifth seminar in a year-long series on topics relevant to Mexico and California at UC MEXUS headquarters, 3324 Olmsted Hall.

The series is a project of the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS), a system-wide institute that makes its home on the UCR campus. Every month through September 2007, the Institute will bring together scholars from the University of California and Mexico from a wide range of disciplines such as sociology, history, anthropology, conservation biology and environmental sciences.

All programs are free and open to the public. Guest parking in Lot 6 costs $6. Permits are available at the information kiosks at the entrances to campus.
