We need our ALIPAC activists to spring into action, calling, e-mailing, and faxing members of the New York House and Senate to request an emergency session, to override Governor Spitzer's plan to give licenses to illegal aliens despite 72% public opposition.

Note: The New York state government grants the Speaker of the House, Sheldon Silver and the Senate Majority Leader, Joseph Bruno the powers to call a special emergency session. Please make first contact with the leadership of the NY House and Senate.

To take action now, please do the following.

REMINDER: Many of you will want to communicate with us and ask us to set up template faxes and e-mails for you. The reason ALIPAC does not do this is because template or repetitive faxes and emails are much more likely to be discarded or have less impact with lawmakers than your own unique messages. Governor Elliot Spizer:

According to the reports, you have decided to allow illegal aliens in your state to obtain a drivers license, although 72% of your constituents are against this. Giving licenses to illegal aliens will attract more illegal aliens into America and into New York State. All American student drivers are taught that a license is a privilege. New York State should not be providing benefits and privileges to illegal aliens. I hope you will reconsider this erroneous path and stand with your constituents on this point.

As well, I called the governors office and left a message and explained my own governor (Oregon, Kulongoski) had also made the decision that allowing licenses to illegal aliens was a good idea, although most Oregonians were against it as well. I stated that Kulongoski has since changed his mind and realized it was an unwise decision, as should Governor Spitzer.

I'm asking you to call a special session to block Governor Spitzer 's illegal alien driving program. New York is a motor voter state and giving licenses to illegal aliens is also giving them the power to elect a the President of the United States in 2008.

Frankly, the executive order he signed is clearly abuse of power. The executive order is an interpretation tool, and does not grant the governor the power to write legislation. That is the legislature’s sole duty. This program must be stopped before the damage is done.

Called both Bruno's office and Silvers. Bruno's aid said they are 100% against it and Bruno is working on legislation to stop this, but need the backing of the assembly on it.

Silvers office did not state his position on this subject but seemed interested in the fact that an out of state call came in for it.

My statement to both was similar to that of the call to the governnors office about Governor Kulongoski of Oregon's initial position on giving licenses to illegal aliens, which he has since rescinded that. I suggested that with all that had happened (9/11) in NY state, it seemed to be such a terrible decision to not only encourage potential fraud in NY state, by illegal aliens, but also potentially encouraging possible terrorists by giving out licenses so freely.

Let them know that the illegal will continue to break laws. Issuing them a license just intices them to carry insurance, change place of known address and avoid inspections and taxes. Everything the illegal will do when they get a license will be against the law and again the citizen will be held accountable for it at the end.

Bratton, Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and former Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) today remarked on how changes to New York's driver's license policy will improve law enforcement's ability to fight crime and terrorism while also improving road safety.

Chief Bratton said: “As former Commissioner of the New York City Police Department and now Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, I support efforts that have the potential to solve crimes and improve traffic safety. That’s why I backed legislation in California that would give undocumented immigrants the ability to get a driver’s license once they have provided proof of their identification. It is my belief that by doing that you would reduce the number of hit and runs and increase the number of insured motorists on the road. We would also now have undocumented immigrants’ identifying information on record such as photographs and addresses which could prove helpful in the fight against crime and terrorism.â€
