WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The 9/11 Families for a Secure America (9/11 FSA) and NumbersUSA today presented the 2006 Homeland Defender Awards to Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.V.), Sen. James Talent (R-Mo.), Rep. John Hostettler (R-Ind.), and Rep. Lincoln Davis (D-Tenn.) for their ongoing, tireless efforts to ensure the security of our homeland and of the American people.

Recipients of the Homeland Defender Awards are selected based on their votes, legislative work and leadership on critical national security issues related to our borders, immigration and document fraud, interior enforcement, and security gaps in our visa and immigration programs and policies.

"Senator Byrd was paying attention to the problems with the nation's immigration system before the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center - and has continued his vigilance ever since," said 9/11 family member Bruce DeCell.

"Last spring when the Senate majority was passing a giant reward of amnesty for illegal aliens and more than doubling of the flow of foreign workers, Senator Talent's votes consistently reflected his commitment to national security," said NumbersUSA Executive Director Roy Beck.

"With the courage of his convictions, grounded in evidence, Congressman Hostettler has often resisted and counteracted efforts by top leaders in his own party as they attempted to ignore obvious signs of security failures. He has been willing to listen to government officials and workers inside our security agencies who have warned about serious security breaches in our immigration system," said 9/11 family member Joan Molinaro.

"The decisions that have been made in Congress on secure borders have resulted and will result in the deaths of American citizens. The next time there is a terrorist attack and guilt is laid at the feet of those in power in Washington, Congressman Lincoln Davis will be able to say that he fought the tide and tried to prevent our enemies from entering our country," said 9/11 family member Peter Gadiel.

The 9/11 FSA is a non-profit organization comprised of survivors and family members of victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It seeks to inform and educate the American public, elected officials and legislators of the obvious and not so obvious shortcomings in our nation's security, including the links between immigration policies and terrorism. The ultimate goal of 9/11 FSA is to secure our nation against future terrorist attacks.

NumbersUSA is a non-profit, non-partisan, public policy organization with more than 220,000 active members across the United States. It supports the recommendations of the bi- partisan Barbara Jordan Commission on Immigration Reform and works with government whistleblowers and others to ensure adequate oversight of the Federal agencies tasked with implementing our immigration laws and securing our nation against terrorist attacks.
