Call Fla. State Senators to Ask for Passage of E-Verify Bill
Call Select State Senators to Ask for Passage of E-Verify Bill
This is a special message for NumbersUSA members in Florida.
Dear Florida activist,
Legislation is starting to move in the state legislature that would prevent citizens from having to compete with illegal aliens for taxpayer-funded state contractor jobs.HB 219, which would require state contractors to use E-Verify, unanimously passed the House Governmental Affairs Policy Committee on March 24. Unfortunately, the related Senate bill (SB 1880) may be in jeopardy.
Senate Chairman Jeremy Ring has delayed consideration of SB 1880 in his Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee. Today (April 1), almost one month after the bill was placed in his committee, Sen. Ring finally scheduled a hearing for the week of April 12th. Since a total of five Senate committees are scheduled to hear the bill, there may not be time to pass it before session adjourns on April 30.
The group Floridians for Immigration Enforcement http://www.numbersusa.com/hub?action=ro ... 4574&lid=9 tells us the best way to spur passage of the Senate bill is to convince Senate President Jeff Atwater, who controls the Senate agenda, to fast-track the bill by reducing the number of committees it must pass through. Senator Ring’s assistance is critical as well because the bill must pass through his committee first. Please call and email both Senators. Special talking points for each are included below.

Special Message for Senate President Jeff Atwater
Please fast-track passage of SB 1880 – the state contractor E-Verify bill -- by reducing the number of committees it must pass through.
Sen. Jeremy Ring has delayed consideration of SB 1880 in the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee. It now won’t be able to clear five committees before adjournment. Don’t let an important bill fall on your watch because of a recalcitrant chairman.
Senator Jeremy Ring
Call (850) 487-5094 or (954) 917-1392
E-mail ring.jeremy.web@flsenate.gov
Special Message for Chairman Jeremy Ring
I am very disappointed that you have delayed consideration of SB 1880 – the state contractor E-Verify bill -- in the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee. You can redeem yourself by quickly passing this important bill during the week of April 12 or earlier.
Additional Talking Points
SB 1880 would require state contractors to use E-Verify to confirm that new hires are legal workers. I’m sure you agree that tax dollars should be used to get Floridians back to work, not illegal workers.
There is no valid excuse for allowing state contractors to hire illegal workers, particularly when unemployment stands at 12.2 percent.
The Obama Administration requires federal contractors to use E-Verify. Federal agencies, Congress and a number of states use it as well. Now, it’s time for Florida to be pro-active in protecting U.S. workers.
E-Verify is free to employers, easy to use and effective. 96.9 percent of those checked through E-Verify are automatically authorized for employment within seconds. The program has an extraordinarily high satisfaction rate.
E-Verify will not burden state contractors. Any human resources employee assigned to collect information for the Federal I-9 form would simply spend a few extra seconds typing data into E-Verify. Nor will it lead to discrimination because all new hires must be checked.
The easiest and most effective thing you can do to show your voters that you are serious about putting Floridians back to work is supporting SB 1880. Please stand up for legal workers in the Sunshine State.
