    FAIR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

    This Week's Action Request

Help Build Support for the Border Protection Corps Act

    August 22, 2005
    In this update:

Urge your House Representative to Support the Border Protection Corps Act
Urge Governors Schwarzenegger and Perry to Follow Lead and Declare Immigration Emergency
Help Build Support the Border Protection Corps Act

Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) is calling on all enforcement minded immigration reformers to help generate support for his Border Protection Corps Act of 2005, H.R. 3622. This legislation, introduced on July 29 with 47 original cosponsors, would authorize the governor of a State to organize and call into service a militia of able-bodied and eligible citizens to help prevent individuals from unlawfully entering the United States.

H.R. 3622 is necessary because federal authorities do not currently have the manpower or the resources to protect America's international borders from potential terrorists and criminal gang members seeking to enter the country.

Urge Governors Schwarzenegger and Perry to Follow Lead and Declare Immigration Emergency

In response to the growing illegal immigration crisis, Governor Bill Richardson and Governor Janet Napolitano last week declared states of emergency along the New Mexico and Arizona border with Mexico.

Richardson's executive order earmarks $1.75 million for border counties, and Napolitano's order frees up $1.5 million in disaster funds to help counties along the border pay for fence repairs, overtime for law enforcement agents and other steps to combat soaring illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

Napolitano faulted the federal government for failing to secure the border, while Richardson noted the need for a comprehensive strategy that involves local governments.

Clearly, America's entire border with Mexico is in a state of emergency. Until the federal government provides adequate resources to deal with this crisis, states must do what they can to respond to the problem.

Please call California Governor Schwarzenegger (916-445-2841) and Texas Governor Perry (512-463-1782) this week and urge them to follow the lead and declare states of emergency along the rest of the border with Mexico.
