GOP Blocks Immigration Reform
By Newsweek

Sometime in the spring, Democrats in Congress will tackle immigration reform. Like a similar effort in 2007, the proposed legislation will crack down on the hiring of undocumented workers, create a temporary visa system for future flows of migrants, and provide a pathway to citizenship for certain illegal immigrants who are already here. Also, like in 2007, it will set off a firestorm. This time, though, it will be even more intense because high unemployment often correlates with anti-immigrant sentiment. The Senate will take the lead and make headway. But in the House, where members will be just months away from midterm elections, things will fall apart, as moderate Democrats join a united GOP opposition. Republicans will emerge victorious. Yet in getting there, they’ll employ such strident rhetoric that, in the minds of many, they’ll seal their image as anti-immigrant and anti-Latino. Come November, Hispanics will respond with energetic turnout, helping keep some House seats blue and further ensconcing themselves in the Democratic fold.

Liberals are hoping.
