Many Senators are agitated ... could change their vote at last minute ... phone now

"Called Sununu, Domenici, Conrad, Dorgan, Gregg, Alexander, Frist, Smith, Cochran, Collins, Snowe and Coleman. (Landrieu, Stabenow, Wyden: Phones didn't answer). Response: VERY positive! Told me calls were "overwhelming" and "99% like mine!!!"
    ----------Catherine Dearing

    DEAR FRIENDS,

There is no question that Senate offices have been hammered by our side. (And they need another day of it, at least. Please call offices of your two Senators.)

I believe some of these offices could decide at the last minute that there is very little upside and a whole lot of downside to voting for this massive S. 2611 amnesty and immigration increase.

You have two kinds of calls to make today:

One is to the 33 Senators who we know oppose this amnesty. (See below for message to give them.)

The other message is to the other 67 who have either decided to support the amnesty or aren't totally sure.

When you call Senators in the second group today, emphasize that Senators should vote NO on cloture (a procedure that stops debate and allows for a final vote) mainly because Senators simply don't know enough to make such a momentous decision.

You are not asking these Senators to make a definite decision against the bill. Rather, you are asking them to admit that they really have little idea of the cost to taxpayers, of the effect on American workers' wages, of the effect on the environment, of the effect on national security.

History -- and probably your state's voters -- will judge harshly Senators who adopt the largest and most expansive immigration policy ever without careful evaluation.

The most prudent policy for the country and for their own political careers would be to put off a vote on this bill until there are more answers, you can tell them.

Mention that the Department of Homeland Security section that would be in charge of ensuring that the bill was executed properly has just now gone public with the opinion that it has no idea how it could handle the bill quickly and without massive fraud protecting the nation's security.

Always start and end with the appeal to vote NO on cloture on S. 2611.

Which Senators need to hear this message? All the Senators who are not in the list of anti-amnesty Senators just below.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO OUR ALLIES IN THE SENATE TODAY

Many of the Senators who have stood with us the most on amendments this past week, plan to vote FOR cloture on S. 2611 ... even though they plan to vote AGAINST the bill in the end.

Yes, you heard that right. It is extremely distressing.

That means they will help get the required 60 votes on cloture to end debate and allow a final vote on the bill. Then they will vote against the final bill in a vote that only requires 51 to pass.

Our best chance to slow down this amnesty train is on cloture which requires 60 votes instead of 50. We can kill the bill with 41 votes on cloture. But it will take 51 to kill it in a final vote for passage.

Why are our allies doing that? Because they say they made a deal with Sen. McCain, Sen. Kennedy and gang that if they were allowed to bring up amendments for debate and votes that they would not stand in the way of a final vote on the bill.

It was a lousy deal, if they made it. And we are not at all sure of just how binding any kind of informal agreement really ought to be.

Your job -- if you live in states with Senators leaning heavily our way -- is to tell your Senators that they need to vote NO when they have the best chance of stopping this insane bill (and that is on cloture).

Use some of the arguments above about it just not being right to bring up this bill for a vote when so much about it remains to be discovered.

Remember when you call to be polite and aware that the staffers to whom you speak are not responsible for the bad things their bosses do.

You have been calling these 33 and thanking them for voting almost perfectly on the amendments.

But many of these are planning to vote the WRONG way and vote FOR cloture -- out of some kind of sense of obligation to open-borders Senators who allowed them to offer some amendments.

Some are doing that out of a sense of desperation. Sen. Lott (R-Mississippi) is being reported as saying he opposes the bill but thinks a bill has to pass just to show the public that the Senate (and especially Republicans) are doing SOMEthing!!!!

Make clear to these Senators that having no bill come out of the Senate will be cheered by citizens like you as SOMEthing really good.

    OTHER TALKING POINTS

No. 1. If your Senators vote YES on S. 2611, they will spend the rest of their careers explaining why they voted to:

reward 8-12 million illegal aliens with an amnesty allowing them to permanently take American jobs and become U.S. citizens

entice millions more foreign workers to illegally enter our communities, crowd the housing and schools, take the jobs and depress the wages because they reasonably can believe they eventually will be given an amnesty, too

double legal immigration from 1 million to 2 million a year, when our traditional annual immigration has been only 250,000 and when most Americans say legal immigration already is too high

give out permanent green cards to up to 66 million foreign workers and dependents over the next 20 years

No. 2: S. 2611 is not just a controversial bill. Rather, it would dramatically change most occupations and communities in America with the largest movement of foreign workers in world history.

No. 3: If they vote for S. 2611, you are part of a large network of the state's voters who will work diligently to make sure:

that the public will come to know them by the nickname of Senator Amnesty

that they will be derided at every appearance as an enemy of the working families and local communities of your state.

No. 4: Emphasize that it is not being obstructionist to vote AGAINST cloture on S. 2611 because:

they know as well as you that the bill has not truly been investigated as to its overall effects and the ability of the government to carry it out without massive fraud and social disruption.

It just doesn't make sense to have a vote on this bill at this time. No matter what deals they may think they've made, they owe it to themselves and the people of your state to vote AGAINST cloture, against allowing the bill to have a chance to be passed at this time.

IF A SENATOR HAS AN OFFICE IN YOUR CITY, GO THERE TODAY

While their phones are ringing off the hook, the staffers would feel even more under fire today if as many of you as possible personally enter their offices.

Print out Grade Cards and Profiles so you can hand them to staffers and talk about past actions. Talk about how much better their Grade Cards will be with a NO vote on the amnesty.

Print out these talking points to use if you need them.

Talk through the specifics of what S. 2611 will do. Most staffers will have no idea of how radical this bill is.

Do we know who the senators are that are on the fence? Maybe it's best to concentrate our resources on them?

I called 20 yesterday, will call more today.

We have to get message through that 76% of America does not want amnesty and their poll numbers are incorrect.
