    Update from the CA Border

The April MMP border watch operation in Campo has been a smashing success so far. The illegal traffic has been very heavy out there the past few weeks. Border Patrol reports that when they interview the ones they catch, they are all saying they are coming for the Amnesty. Mexican media is telling the Mexican people to go now if you want the amnesty.

We have had approximately 75 Minutemen Patriots show up so far and help us close down about 7 miles of high traffic border in Campo. The border patrol is thrilled to have us there and can now focus on other hot spots in the area. Thanks to everyone who has come down so far for your "tour of duty", whether one day, one week, or indefinitely like 5 of the Minutemen down there. Max from Cape Cod, Mass. made it out on Friday after a 4 day Greyhound bus ride. He is loving it and glad he came. He is helping to run Camp Patriot, our base camp near the monument. See attached pics. If you haven't visited our operation yet, please try to get out there within the next week or so. We will be there en masse until at least the 30th of April.

All media thus far has been very favorable. We have even had Austrian, British, French, and Spanish media come out to get our story. Immigration is a hot topic in Europe too and they are intrigued by what we're doing to secure the border that the American government won't do.

    Highlights:

Friday: I arrive a day early to set up and find 10 MM already there and ready to secure the border. Many old faces and a couple new patriots, pissed off by what is happening on the streets in SoCal and in the halls of the U.S. Congress.

Saturday - Big meeting and rally near the VFW with about 65 MM in attendance. Excellent words spoken by Jim Gilchrist, Ted Hayes, Marvin, and others. We concluded our gathering with a spontaneous and rousing "God Bless America". The media loved it. We then were invited to partake in a carne asada lunch across from the BP Station by the border patrol and Young Explorers. After a great meal with , we convoyed to Camp Patriot at the border for a detailed briefing about how we watch the border and assist the U.S. Border Patrol to keep out foreign invaders. We posted everyone out and started the large operation.

7pm BP reported a large group of 20 west of 128 trying to cross that included some definite gang members (heading to Orange County to pick strawberries I'm sure). Multiple units and quads were deployed by BP to keep them from crossing. MM monitored the situation from the east.

Sunday - Enrique Morones came out to visit us and drove up to our monument HQ with a cameraman and a 8 year old girl, got out of his truck and made the usual ass out of himself by yelling at our women while holding his camcorder. Again he was trying to provoke an incident, but our MM remained calm. Soon, Ray Herrera was unleashed on him to give him a dose of his own verbal medicine, in Spanish. I was down in Campo getting supplies during all this, but I heard Enrique was effectively neutralized. The sheriff arrived and had to tell Enrique to leave. He promised to come back later and camp with us, but of course he never came back.

At about 7pm a group of 4 illegals was spotted by BP scope truck just south of our position near 134 at the fence. The 3 of us on that post immediately lit up the area and Freckles the dog went to the fence to find them and give them a bark attack. I walked down to the east when the BP said they were moving east along the south side of the 10 ft. fence. Using light and noise tactics, they stayed on their side. Soon they were joined by 7 more for a total of 11. When they tried to cross under the large culvert, they set off a noise maker and did not cross. We kept them there the rest of the night and they did not cross.

Monday - 10pm BP scope truck spots a group of 6 south of 134 again approaching the fence and a group of 6 plus 2 spotters approaching the fence just east of The Oaks to the west at the same time. MM in both areas were alerted and lit the area up. No crossings reported.

Lots of excitement out there and the smugglers are not happy about the large Minuteman presence. If only Bush could see what goes on out there everyday..... We need a good fence NOW and NO AMNESTY for these criminals! Join us and send a message that Americans are through with this nonsense and wide open borders.

Anyone interested in going to the border, PM me. You can easily go up for a day.

    Begin the Hunt

Red alert! Today begins on the state border of Arizona that which has been called in Mexico the hunt of immigrants. In contrast to more than a thousand participants of the Minuteman project whose actions are perceived and defended as a direct answer to President Bush and his immigration politics. The objective is very clear for this group of people: they should protect American citizens from the "lash of the illegal immigrants". The perceptions of this issue could not be more contrasting.

Of what do the actions of this group of Americans consist? During the whole month of April, according to the web site of the Minuteman Project, more than a thousand volunteers will patrol a section of the border between Arizona and Sonora, where the authorities from the US detain more than 1,600 undocumented people a day. According to the Standard Operating Procedures-SOP, the document where the instructions for volunteers are given, there will be teams of 4 to 8 people, equipped with binoculars, a video camera, and first aid items to execute the patrolling activities.

According to SOP, published on the Minuteman Project's website, the volunteers should not have any direct contact with the Mexicans that cross the border, they should alert immediately the Border Patrol to identify the locality of the undocumented. These volunteers could carry guns that they have permission to carry, however rifles are not permitted. The volunteers also, should provide medical assistance and water if the immigrant requests it.

Even though the instructions given indicate that the activities of the Minutemen are legal in the US, that could be far from the reality, since the justified concern from both governments is how to control an armed group that is patrolling the desert "hunting", pardon me, looking for Mexican illegals.

When we enter the websites of the anti immigrant groups working in the US and do a comparison between them and the Minutemen, what is surprising is that the Minuteman Project is possibly the most moderate. Other groups express their hatred, without measure, of the Mexican immigrants. In contrast, the Minutemen make a big effort to assure that the persecution of migrants does not have anything to do with race, but with the fact that they are violating the law of the US and their concern, they affirm, is for the national security of their country and for the lack of control of the border.

What is to be most concerned of, is that the Minuteman project and the group that is found behind this movement is much more intelligent and sophisticated, giving an air of legality and even normality to their migrant hunting. I don't want you to think that I'm supporting the actions of the Minutemen. On the contrary, what is important is to understand them, because unfortunately these groups, rather than disappearing, have a tendency to multiply. But the most frustrating of all is that they will brag that they are working within the margin of law, against those that cross the border illegally and are violating US law.

For more than wanting to argue the importance that Mexican immigrants have to the US economy, the law is the law. As much as we want to defend to the undocumented Mexicans, the fundamental problem is this: they are "undocumented". And as soon as the volunteers, as actions of the Minuteman Project, start illegally using their weapons, or attack or detain with no reason Mexican immigrants, their acts will be a model to follow for other groups in the future. For that reason it is very unfortunate the announcement of Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) to attack the Minutemen if they attack the migrants crossing the border, because the only thing this will do is justify the arguments of Minutemen: migration brings lawlessness and violence to the US.

And unfortunately, the Minutemen have already had their first victory in the last weeks. They were the point of discussion between presidents Fox and Bush, affording them credibility, and thus giving more importance to their presence in the media. But additionally, this week the government of the United States announced that it will be fortifying the presence of the Border Patrol by 25% in the same area where the Minutemen are acting.

The argument of the U.S. government is that the use of 23 helicopters and 534 new Border Patrol agents is to stop the possible entrance to the U.S. of Al Qaeda terrorists, reconfirming the reasoning of the minutemen: We should control the borders and stop everyone attempting to cross the border illegally.

Additionally, the announcement of the Mexican government that the Beta groups will try to dissuade the immigrants from crossing the border will be perceived as another victory for the Minutemen, driving the Mexican authorities to take actions that should have been taken before.

It would not be surprising if after a month of activity of the Minutemen, the result would reduce considerably the passage of immigrants, which will be interpreted as that a thousand volunteers are more powerful than the efforts of the governments of Mexico and the United States.

Ladyof shallot enjoyed your post. I would like to get involved in the MM project. Do you think that it would be possible for the MM to run a weekend shuttle from Lindbergh field to Campo if enough people were interested.
