United States Customs and Border Protection report seizing nearly $74 million in drugs at eight ports of entry in south Texas from October 2011 to December 2011.

The agency's fiscal year began Oct. 1, 2011, and the first quarter of the fiscal year was completed Dec. 31, 2011.

Officers discovered more than 32,000 pounds of controlled substances in vehicles and on pedestrians crossing the ports during the first quarter, the bulk of which was marijuana. The load also includes 942 pounds of cocaine, 414 pounds of methamphetamine and 62 pounds of heroin.

Also seized were $2.1 million in undeclared currency, five firearms and 12,640 rounds of ammunition.

Officers intercepted more than 6,000 people attempting to enter the country illegally.

The numbers from the first quarter of the fiscal year include the south Texas ports of entry that span from Brownsville to Del Rio.
