The Cameron County Sheriff's Office seized about $250,000 after conducting a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon in Brownsville, county Sheriff Omar Lucio said.

A deputy stopped the vehicle of Houston resident Humberto Hernandez Amaro, 45, at Port Isabel Road and Boca Chica Boulevard around 3:30 p.m.

The man appeared nervous, and the deputy spotted a thick gym bag in the car, Lucio said.

Amaro gave the deputy consent to search the car and the bag. Although the car concealed no narcotics or weapons, Lucio said the gym bag was stuffed with $250,000 in cash.

Amaro is not currently facing charges but the case is under investigation.

"We have to make sure we know where the money came from, whether it’s legitimate or or not," Lucio said.
