HIDALGO — More than 100 pounds of cocaine, valued at more than $3 million, was confiscated at two ports of entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers this past weekend.
Officers at the Anzalduas International Bridge seized 30 packages of alleged cocaine after a secondary inspection of a northbound 1992 GMC pickup truck driven by a 39-year-old Mexican citizen from Monterrey, Mexico, according to a news release from the agency.
The cocaine, which weighed 73.9 pounds and was valued at more than $2 million, was found hidden within the vehicle, which was also seized by CBP officers.
During a separate incident on Jan. 30, officers working at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge seized 14 packages of alleged cocaine after referring a northbound 2003 Volkswagon Jetta sedan to secondary inspection. Inside the vehicle, officers found more than 26 pounds of cocaine, valued at $856,443. CBP arrested the driver, a 46-year-old U.S. citizen from El Paso, and seized the vehicle.
Both drivers were transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
