OFIR members and supporters:

Senate Bill 1080 just passed the House and now it will go the Governor’s office for his signature! Governor Kulongoski has promised to sign it.

The driver license bill passed the House by a 45 to 13 margin. Representatives Sal Esquivel (R-Medford) and Rep. Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) gave great speeches in support. (The link to Respect for Law Act website now has a picture of Rep. Thatcher and Representative Linda Flores holding an OFIR sign).

Special thanks go to the Chair of the House Transportation Committee, Representative Terry Beyer, (D-Springfield), who ushered the bill through the committee and carried it to the House floor and asked for it to be passed. Senator Rick Metsger, (D-Mt Hood), Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee is also due our thanks for carrying it on the Senate side.

Oregonians for Immigration Reform has worked with members of the State Legislature for years to pass a driver license bill requiring proof of legal status, a valid Social Security number and ending the policy of issuing 8 year driver licenses to people here on 6-month visa’s. Senate Bill 1080 will do that.

Everyone in OFIR who has called, written letters, e-mailed, faxed letters or went to Salem to testify in support of a secure driver license should feel a great sense of accomplishment. As Representative Sal Esquivel said on the floor when he urged the passage of the bill, “this is a good first step.â€
