It’s Official: Trump Admin Announces End of U.S. Aid to UN Palestinian ‘Refugee’ Agency
0
AP/Adel Hana1 Sep 20186The Times of Israel reports: The Trump administration announced Friday it is cutting nearly $300 million in planned funding for the UN agency that aids Palestinian refugees, and that it would no longer fund the agency after decades of support. Instead, it said it would seek other channels by which to aid the Palestinians.
The administration castigated the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for failed practices, and indicated that it rejected the criteria by which UNRWA defines Palestinian refugees, whereby the UN agency confers refugee status not only on original refugees but on their millions of descendants.
The State Department said in a written statement that the United States “will no longer commit further funding to this irredeemably flawed operation.” “The fundamental business model and fiscal practices that have marked UNRWA for years – tied to UNRWA’s endlessly and exponentially expanding community of entitled beneficiaries – is simply unsustainable and has been in crisis mode for many years,” the statement said, a reference to the fact that the agency grants refugee status to all the descendants of the original Palestinian refugees, something not granted by the UN to refugees from any other places.

Palestine says U.S. plan to end refugee aid will promote terror
0
UPI1 Sep 20183Sept. 1 (UPI) — Palestinian officials on Saturday said the Trump administration’s decision to stop funding for the United Nations agency that provides aid to Palestinian refugees would promote extremism.
Palestine’s presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudaineh said the decision “does not serve peace; rather, it promotes terrorism in the region.”
“This is an assault on the rights of the Palestinian people, and part of a series of anti-Palestinian U.S. decisions and policies,” Rudaineh said.
The announcement comes a day after the United States said it would be cutting funding to the
U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees because the operation is unsustainable and “irredeemably flawed.”
Pasletine officials said they are considering seeking help of the U.N. General Assembly and Security Council to counter the decision, which Palestinian officials say is a declaration of war on the issue of Palestinian refugees and the Palestinian cause.
“The U.S. decision to cut the funds to UNRWA is in violation of all international resolutions, and this requires the U.N. to take a firm stance and appropriate decisions to confront it,” Rudaineh said.
Saeb Erekat, secretary of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization said the United States is not entitled to cancel UNRWA and by doing so is in violation of international law and the U.N. resolution that created the agency to provide relief to Palestine refugees.
“We reject and condemn this American decision in its entirety,” Erekat said.
The United States historically has contributed more than $360 million each year to the UNWRA each year.
A statement from State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert on Friday said the United States was no longer willing to shoulder a “disproportionate share” of UNRWA’s costs.

You're right on this. Trump was all over the media when the Honduras (Central America or whatever) caravan was coming across Mexico to flood our border with asylum claimants. Well, as I've seen in media print over the last few days, they're still coming but all of the sudden Trump has been pretty much hush-hush on the situation. What's going on? The situation really doesn't seem to have changed that much.

If he was all over the media, it wasn't about the caravan, not for the first 3 days. I remember, because when the news first exploded, I waited anxiously for 3 days, thinking he will do something now. For 3 days there was total silence from the WH. Then he finally came out and I believe said he/they had stopped it, which turned out not to be true. He then threaded the needle on the issue for a few days, and now you are correct back to ignoring it all again.
