More than 100 in Guard volunteer for border duty

    Associated Press

    Published: Wednesday, 06/28/06
KNOXVILLE — More than 100 members of the Tennessee National Guard have answered Gov. Phil Bredesen's call for volunteers to help patrol the Mexican border.

The number of volunteers "changes daily" but by Tuesday was up to 177, a Guard spokesman said.

Bredesen last week pledged 100 Guard members to support a limited deployment of troops for the patrol proposed by President Bush to help curb illegal immigration.

The president proposed deploying 6,000 troops at a time in two-week rotations until enough Border Patrol agents could be hired.

At least 100 Tennessee troops will go to Arizona probably by July 20, Lt. Col. Gary Herr, director of military support for the Tennessee Army National Guard, said in a story The Knoxville News Sentinel published online Tuesday.

The volunteers will come from the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, the Air National Guard's 134th Air Refueling Wing and the 176th Army National Guard's Maintenance Battalion. The 278th completed a tour of duty in Iraq last November. •
