Dairy farm loses most workers after ICE raid

FORT MORGAN, Colo. (AP) — Immigrant rights activists say a roundup of people accused of falsifying documents to work in the U.S. is creating fear and confusion in the community.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials announced the arrest of 11 people in Fort Morgan. KUSA-TV reports that the arrests took place Wednesday at the Wildcat Dairy. The station reports that 50 of the dairy's 60 workers are now gone.

Morgan County Undersheriff Dave Martin says authorities served arrest warrants at the dairy and Fort Morgan homes. Dairy owner Ed Wilgenburg did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

ICE says 20 egregious violators were indicted by a state grand jury on accusations that they possessed or used fraudulent "green cards" and Social Security cards to obtain employment in the United States.

Denver – The arrest of 11 undocumented immigrants at a dairy farm east of Denver has alarmed Hispanics in the area, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, or CIRC, said Thursday.

Wednesday's raid at the Wildcat Dairy in Fort Morgan was the result of a "routine" review of the employment eligibility forms, known as I-9s, submitted by the farm's employees, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.

"Our allies in Fort Morgan report fear and confusion from workers and community members in the wake of this 'operation', clearly undermining local integration and community building initiatives," the CIRC's policy director, attorney Hans Meyer, said in a statement.

"It is certainly not worth the costs to localities to detain people for extended periods of time; and the impact in misery to families and the larger community may be immeasurable," he said.

Meyer also complained that immigration-enforcement prosecution "focuses solely on workers trying to earn a living, and not on those who employed them."

ICE said its review of I-9s determined that 53 Wildcat employees - representing 89 percent of the farm's workforce - lacked authorization to work in the United States.

The federal agency conveyed that information to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office and a county grand jury issued indictments last week for 20 Wildcat Dairy employees from Mexico and Central America accused of using forged Social Security and alien registration cards.

Eleven of the indicted workers were apprehended Wednesday and the other nine remain at large. All 20 face charges of criminal impersonation.

"I know many of the families who work in that dairy. They're honest people," said the Rev. Reyes Valenzuela, pastor of a Baptist church in Fort Morgan.

"Now they're afraid and many of them may leave. And the most regrettable thing is that the operation was carried out with the help of the owner of the farm," the Mexican-born minister said.

The CIRC's Meyer said religious and community groups in Fort Morgan will aid the families of the 11 people arrested, who are being held without bail.

LOL...that's funny JD! I think LA and NYC have some sort if implied immunity against ICE investigations. And the MSM generally doesn’t cover this stuff because they do not want to admit there is any problem.

When I said window dressing I should have used a term such as going through the motions. I guess occasionally, these guys have to conduct an investigation somewhere to justify their existence. An ICE investigation in LA or NYC could potentially cause "fear and confusion"amongst the illegal invaders who have claimed those cities. That's the last thing our government wants to do is upset the illegals.

If you like working with cows it sounds like there are some jobs open here.

Rev. Valenzuela, being Hispanic himself, has their back. If they are so honest, Rev. Valenzuela, what are they doing working here illegally? Are you trying to tell us they didn't know they were doing anything wrong when they crossed the border illegally and took jobs they weren't supposed to take? No, Rev. Valenzuela, these aren't honest people and I find it disturbing that a supposed man of God would knowingly lie!

You can add Burger King and Duncan Donuts to that list as well. I have pretty much given up eating fast food as my experience continues to dictate that pretty much all fast food places (here in Illinois) hire illegal aliens in some capacity.

You can add one street corner in Shelbyville KY.They stand there all day i bet that they can triple the catch there.
