HIDALGO — Customs officers uncovered nearly a dozen assault rifles from a man attempting to cross into Mexico.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection stopped Alfonso Torres as he headed south about 1:20 p.m. Friday at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge, a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court states.

Torres denied having anything to declare when asked by officers, who searched his green 1994 Ford pickup and found 11 AK-47 assault rifles behind the plastic bed liner along the sides of his truck, the complaint states. Officers also seized 12 bullet magazines hidden inside the truck.

Torres, 41, told federal agents he was supposed to be paid $200 for delivering the guns to a person in Mexico.

Torres made an initial appearance Monday morning on a charge of illegal exportation of defense articles in U.S. District Court in McAllen. He remains in federal custody.
