12 ARRESTED FOR IDENTITY FRAUD AT FERTILIZER PLANT

WEVER – Twelve people were arrested this afternoon for identity fraud when officers with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement boarded a couple of school buses carrying Iowa Fertilizer Company construction workers to a safety meeting.

“Out of more than 40 people, we found 12 without proper documentation,” said Sheriff Jim Sholl.

The sheriff’s office received an anonymous tip earlier in the day and notified the immigration office in Cedar Rapids.

At about 12:30 p.m. they moved on the buses. Workers who don’t speak English have a separate safety meeting that is taught in Spanish, Sholl said.

Because the plant site is so large, workers are bused from place to place on the site.

“I need to make clear that it’s not Iowa Fertilizer Company’s wrongdoing,” Sholl said.

“It’s not that IFC is recruiting. When someone presents photo ID and the right papers, there’s nothing to flag.

Next year around tax time, some person will find out their identity was used.”
