State and federal officials arrested 14 suspects and confiscated hundreds of pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine during a 14-month drug-trafficking investigation, authorities said.

DPS detectives worked with the Drug Enforcement Administration throughout the operation, called "SMASH."

Authorities said they believe a Mexican drug-trafficking organization operating in the Yuma area was responsible for moving hundreds of pounds of meth and cocaine through the state.

The organization's ties to the Yuma area were revealed during a criminal investigation into a mid-level drug organization in Yuma County in April 2009.

DPS said the drugs were being transported through hidden vehicle compartments. During during the investigation, 158 pounds of cocaine and 145 pounds of meth were seized along with 17 vehicles, $350,000 in U.S. currency and six weapons.

Fourteen suspects were arrested on a variety of charges, including possession, use, sale, and transportation for sale.

Eleven of those suspects were indicted on drug-smuggling charges.
