McALLEN, Texas - Authorities have made the area's largest weapons seizure in a decade and feel confident that the 147 assault rifles seized in Laredo were headed to Mexico.
Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza says that officers acting on a tip from the Webb County Sheriff's Office stopped a vehicle Saturday afternoon containing the cache of brand-new, boxed assault rifles, 200 high-capactiy magazines, 53 bayonets and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. One of the two men in the vehicle tried to flee, but was apprehended. Police have not yet identified the suspect.
Mexico has long complained that its violent drug war was fueled in large part by weapons smuggled across the border from the U.S.

Big cache of Mexico-bound assult weapons seized in Texas
06:05 PM
Texas police have seized a big cache of assault weapons and ammunition that authorities say were bound for Mexican drug gangs.
Acting on a tip from the Webb County Sheriff's Office, Laredo police stopped a vehicle containing 147 new, boxed, assault rifles, 200 high-capacity "banana clip" magazines, 53 bayonets and 10,000 rounds of ammunition, the Associated Press writes. Two men were arrested.
Authorities say the weaponry was headed south of the border.
"Two Joe Blows aren't going to buy a bunch of weapons and it stops there," said Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza. "We're pretty positive it was headed to Mexico."
Fellow officer Alberto Escobedo told Reuters the seizure is "a tremendous blow to drug traffickers and organized crime."
