Federal officials granted temporary legal status on Friday to 15 illegal immigrants whose spouses or parents died on 9/11 but who have remained largely invisible, living in the shadows of society for fear of deportation.

Those officials and the families’ supporters said the decision would clear the way for Congress to move forward on bills that would grant the immigrants permanent legal status.

While the families received payments from the Victim Compensation Fund, ranging from $875,000 to $4.1 million, they have not been able to easily invest the payments because they lacked Social Security numbers and other identity documents, their lawyers said.

Man, we are definitely living in confusing times. What's next, are we going to start rewarding the families of bank robbers that are killed while robbing banks? The illegals shouldn't have been in the building and no one should be receiving compensation for their deaths. Are the families that lose loved ones to illegal drunk drivers compensated with a million dollar check?

The families aren't victims! If anything, they're coconspirators to the crime of illegal immigration.

Some of the immigrants were so fearful of being extorted or robbed, with no recourse in the justice system, that they did not tell some relatives and friends of their losses in the attacks.

Lacked S.S.#, how did they pay taxes to the IRS and what name did they use? I do not think they should ever get any type of social services for the rest of their lives. How many family members are they going to be allowed to bring?

Ah, another poignant example of tiptoeing through the hog sty and trying not to step in mud or anything else. I think it used to be called walking on eggs, and with DHS doing this shows me they are not working for the American people, the taxpayers who pay their salaries.
Sorry, but if these illegals need to become a description of the piece of American history in 9/11, which they should, have them have their stories video taped for the record and deport them. We have enough American families who suffered just as much loss.

I have become convinced that the civil justice system is little more than a political football. If you are lucky you belong to a group that lawyers like and will stick up for.
