A well-known Portland grocery store owner is dead after a crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

John Zupan, 66, was hurt in a crash Monday night but died late Tuesday night from his injuries. Zupan was riding a motorcycle on Marine Drive near 138th Ave. in Northeast Portland when a car crossed the center line and hit him.

Zupan was in critical condition until just after 10 p.m. Tuesday when he died.

The man accused of causing the accident made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Multnomah County.

Edy Reynoso-Ramirez is facing drunk driving and assault charges.

According to investigators, Reynoso-Ramirez was speeding when the crash happened. He tried to run away from the scene, said investigators.

Reynoso-Ramirez is in the country illegally and is now on an immigration hold.

At the age of 16, Zupan began work as a courtesy clerk, then as a produce manager and then district manager at local grocery store.

In 1975, Zupan decided to venture out on his own opening the first Zupan's.

Zupan's is still family-owned; John's son, Mike, took over in early 2000 and until Monday's crash John continued to take an active role at the stores he started.
