Undocumented Baltimore man faces deportation to Honduras (update)
Undocumented Baltimore man faces deportation to Honduras
Man has no criminal record, lawyer says
Updated: 6:15 PM EDT Mar 24, 2017
BALTIMORE —
Ten-year-old Anderson was on the phone with his father, who was speaking to his son from jail.
Jesus Peraza was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents two weeks ago after taking Anderson to school.
"He dropped you off at school that day, is that right?" I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller asked of Anderson.
"Yes," Anderson said.
"And then he drove off?" Miller asked.
"Yes," Anderson said.
"When did you find out he had been detained?" Miller asked.
"When my uncle went to pick me up, he told me," Anderson said.
Peraza's arrest was a case that helped provoke a City Council resolution Monday asking ICE to target criminals. Peraza has no criminal convictions, but he does not have legal immigration status.
Under the Trump administration's more aggressive crackdown on unauthorized immigrants, that is grounds for being targeted.
"If there's any other reason an ICE agent thinks they might be a threat, they can be arrested. While under Obama, they were instructed to target people who had been convicted of crimes," said Jared Jaskot said.
Peraza was deported about 10 years ago as a teenager, his lawyer said. He then slipped back into the county, settled in Baltimore, got a job, got married and now has kids. He has not been targeted before.
Peraza did not have any idea he was being sought. Peraza's wife, who WBAL-TV 11 News is not identifying, is also undocumented. If deported, the family would have to return to Honduras, to a city known as the most violent in the world.
Peraza is seeking asylum. So far, it's been rejected.
"They made a determination his fear was not credible. They didn't believe it. They gave us no reason why," Jaskot said.
A federal immigration judge will be asked to review Peraza's case. A request to be released from custody has been denied.
According to Peraza's lawyer, Peraza witnessed a murder in Honduras and is fearful of returning. His son attends Hampstead Hill Academy. The school's principal and others have written letters of support.

It doesn't matter what Obama did nor does it matter if he has a criminal record or not.
He came to this country illegally, end of story!
Everybody who comes here claims they fear gangs or saw a murder in there country and that's why they came here.....
Bla Bla Bla....
We as a country can't take all the poor people of the world who want to come here and reap the benefits from
the hard working American taxpayers.

He is here illegally - period. Enough said. Enforce the law.
Again, when they come here, illegal immigrating is not the only crime they commit. They must commit other crimes to stay here, work, etc.
Sob stories - and half truths.

The guy was deported because he is on the illegal alien reentry priority removal list. I don't understand why these illegal alien supporters and advocates tend to miss one very pertinent fact when they start yelling how Jose is the perfect guy and has committed no crime. Illegal reentry is a felony crime that is punishable by a fine, prison time, or both. This man was a criminal in every sense of the word.

Baltimore immigrant loses bid to stay in US
Jesus Peraza to be escorted back to Honduras

BALTIMORE —
A Baltimore immigrant who was arrested after dropping off his son at school has lost his bid to stay in the U.S. after immigration authorities on Tuesday denied his case.
It was a previously unwritten rule about undocumented immigrants -- stay out of trouble and they could likely stay in the U.S. without being targeted. But that's no longer the case with the aggressive crackdown by the Trump administration on undocumented immigrants.
A local Immigration and Customs Enforcement official denied the request of Jesus Peraza to be allowed to stay in the U.S. Peraza argued that he was in the country for 10 years, had a job and family. He has no record of crimes against people or property.
The ICE official ruled that there was no compelling reason to grant the request. Peraza is subject to immediate deportation.
"He's from Honduras, but he is from the most dangerous city in the world. His wife is from Guatemala, so this idea that people can just go back home is totally a farce. So I think he is going to move to Guatemala and take his whole family with him. We are going to lose a whole family in Baltimore," attorney Jared Jaskot said.
Former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake counted on immigrants coming to Baltimore to bolster the city's population. Peraza will remain in the custody of immigration authorities as he is flown back to Honduras. He fled after being a witness to a murder, authorities said.

That's as it should be. The man had already been deported once before. I'm just surprised he wasn't prosecuted as a felony return!
