2 "Mexican Nationals" Shot and Killed a Texas Border Patrol Agent

The Heartbreaking Words Police Say Slain Off-Duty Border Patrol Agent Told His Dad After They Were Attacked

    Aug. 4, 2014 3:52pm Sara Carter

UPDATE: Sheriff Spence told Kiii-TV that Border Patrol agent Javier Vega, Jr., was fishing with relatives when two men attempted to rob them, opening fire on Vega and his family. Vega was shot and killed and his father was shot in the hip.

The two suspects have now been identified as Mexican nationals Gustavo Tijerina, 30, of La Villa, Texas, and Ismael Hernandez, 40, of Weslaco, Texas.
They were taken into custody Monday and will be officially booked into jail Tuesday, according to Spence.

He said the suspects have confessed to the crime and he is confident that the two will ”face charges of capital murder, attempted capital murder, four counts of aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence,” according to the news site.

An off-duty Border Patrol agent shot in the chest and killed in an attempted robbery Sunday night begged his father to “keep shooting, dad,” while the agent’s mother picked up a rifle and shot at the fleeing suspects as well, police told TheBlaze.

Federal and state law enforcement officials were questioning two male suspects in the killing of the off-duty Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol and the shooting of his father while the family was on a fishing expedition in south Texas.

Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence told TheBlaze the suspects are Hispanic and were apprehended five hours after the shooting, hiding in a shed behind the home of a man living in the area. Law enforcement are investigating whether the men are in the U.S. legally.

Police have not released the name of the agent, but said it does not appear the suspects knew he was a member of the Border Patrol.

Spence said it appears that the agent, his two young children, a young friend and the agent’s parents were fishing together. The suspects had made several passes along the road by the water when they spotted the group, and approached the victims and told them to get on the ground.

The suspects were surprised when they discovered that the off-duty agent and his father were armed, Spence said.

“We’re still putting the pieces together but it doesn’t appear now that they knew he was a Border Patrol agent,” Spence said. ”The Border Patrol agent apparently kept telling his dad to ‘keep firing, dad, keep shooting, dad’ at the suspects after he was already hit.”

At some point, the agent’s mother “apparently picked up the AR-15 rifle and continued shooting at the suspects’ vehicle, hitting the windshield and other parts of the vehicle as the suspects fled.”

Spence said police believe the suspects tossed their weapons as they fled in their vehicle after the shooting.

The sheriff said police had spoken with one family member by phone and were waiting to interview the rest of the family members who were at the scene.

Spence said the FBI, Texas Department of Public Safety and a number of other outside law enforcement agencies have offered their help with the case. Spence said the outpouring of help has been “appreciated because we have limited resources and because it’s a fellow law enforcement officer, it’s all the harder.”

Border Patrol spokesman Joe Guiterrez would not comment on the shooting except to say the incident is under investigation.

A Department of Homeland Security official told TheBlaze they are “looking to see if the suspects are in the United States illegally.”

Willacy County District Attorney Bernard Ammerman, the Texas Ranger Division and the county’s chief investigator have all been involved in questioning the suspects, Spence said.

“Based on what has been found at the crime scene it appears that there was a shoot-out,” Spence said. “The suspects’ vehicle, which was found several miles from the crime scene, was shot at and apparently broke down after the suspects fled. Police investigators are in the process of getting a search warrant to open the vehicle.”

A number of robberies that fit the same pattern have been occurring in Cameron County, which borders Willacy County, Spence said.

“We’ll be looking at the various robberies and if any more people are involved, we will find them,” Spence said. “If there is a connection we’ll find it, and it will be a big relief to the people in our communities if we put an end to this.”

Spence, who has been the county sheriff for 29 years, called the situation heartbreaking.

“I called out a prayer asking the Lord, help us resolve this and five hours later, we found the individuals,” Spence said. “It was nice that we had the assistance from numerous federal and state law enforcement agencies and divine help. Prayers go out to the family of this tragic crime. I can’t imagine what the family is going through at this time.”

"Mexican nationals" most likely means illegal aliens and if we have to wait for Homeland Security to admit they were illegals we will be waiting a long time. If they were here legally DHS will be prompt with the info. Damn traitors at the top!

Congress needs to return and give the nation a declaration of war. I do not understand the mindset, we will spend a trillion dollars and 10 years chasing WMD's that were not there, and will probably add this killing to the "ignore" file, too.

If the killers were illegals Obama will turn them loose, can't you see him pardoning them on the way out the door in January 2017?

Or is this an "act of love" to feed their families? That is what a Bush would say!

Shall we apply Liberal Logic here? Here goes:

If the deceased and his father had not been armed this incident would have merely been a robbery. Instead we now have one life lost and surely the ruin of another two young men. My heart goes out to all three.

Only a Libtard could think that way.

ILLEGAL ALIENS SUSPECTED IN BORDER PATROL AGENT'S DEATH

by ILDEFONSO ORTIZ 5 Aug 2014, 7:50 AM PDT

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The two illegal aliens suspected of murdering an off duty border patrol agent in South Texas are expected to be formally charged Tuesday with capital murder and other offenses.

Breitbart Texas has learned that the two men who confessed to having shot U.S. Border Patrol agent, Javier Vega, in Willacy County are 40-year-old Ismael Hernandez and 30-year-old Gustavo Tijerina, both from Matamoros, Tamaulipas and living in the Rio Grande Valley illegally.

The two men are expected to go before a judge to face one count of capital murder, four counts of aggravated robbery, and other charges for their role in the murder. If convicted of the capital murder charge they could face the death penalty.

Based on the information that the two men have given to authorities, they may be behind a rash of similar robberies in nearby Cameron County, a border county, where they targeted fishermen, said Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence, whose agency is handling the murder case.

The way the men worked was that they would drive around secluded areas looking for victims and then drive back with one of them shooting various rounds into the air while the other would take their victims valuables and vehicles leaving them stranded, Spence said.

Vega had been enjoying time off with his family at a fishing spot on the eastern side of the county near the community of Santa Monica, just west of Lyford Texas.

In Vega’s case, the gunmen encountered a border patrol agent who along with his father fired back to defend their family.

“Sometime were not sure when he was shot in the chest and his father was shot in the hip,” Spence said.

After fighting off the gunmen, Vega’s mother rushed them to get medical attention but the gunshot wound proved fatal, the sheriff said.

The two men sped off but were forced to leave their vehicle behind because of the damage made by Vega’s bullets. The gunmen trekked for miles and hid in a shed in the nearby town of Sebastian where authorities caught them after a five hour manhunt when a homeowner alerted them to their location.

The National Border Patrol Council, a union that represents border patrol agents, issued a statement expressing their sadness at the loss of their fellow agent but praising him and his family on their resilience to fight back in the face of danger. The union also thanked the law enforcement community for their swift response in apprehending the suspects.

“Agent Vega’s actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Border Patrol and his will be a place, deserved of honor and glory, when the final story of the United States Border Patrol is written,” the NBPC said in their prepared statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues in the Rio Grande Valley Sector.”

2 held in killing of off-duty Border Patrol agent

    By - Associated Press - Tuesday, August 5, 2014

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) - Two men from Mexico face capital murder charges after an off-duty Border Patrol agent was fatally shot and his father wounded during a South Texas fishing trip.

Willacy (WIL’-uh-see) County Sheriff Larry Spence says investigators believe the suspects tried to rob Agent Javier Vega Jr. of Kingsville and his family.

Hospital officials on Tuesday didn’t immediately return a message on the condition of Javier Vega Sr. of La Feria (luh FAY’-ree-uh).

The Vegas were shot Sunday night while fishing near Santa Monica with relatives. The suspects were captured in nearby Sebastian.

Jail officials on Tuesday referred questions about the suspects to the sheriff, who didn’t immediately return messages. Spence on Monday said the suspects also face charges of attempted capital murder, aggravated robbery and evidence tampering.
