Two People Held In Suspected Smuggling Operation
Reporting John MacLauchlan
SUNNY ISLES BEACH (CBS4) ―

Federal agents and members of the Sunny Isles Beach police force continue their search for a number of migrants who came ashore Monday evening as part of an apparent smuggling operation.

Sunny Isles Beach police said just before 7:30 p.m. they received a call that a yacht carrying Haitian migrants had grounded itself near the Tropicana Hotel on Collins Avenue at 159th Street during a chase involving a Coast Guard boat.

"I saw a boat being chased by one police boat," eyewitness Camila Andronicos told CBS4 News. "The boat started going faster, the yacht started going faster and faster, going to the left and the right, trying to avoid the police and then they forced it on the beach."

That's when migrants poured out of the boat and fled on foot. Police rounded 14 individuals in the Collins Avenue and beach area and have continued to look for the rest. Of those detained five were from Haiti, including a 16-year-old girl, six were from Jamaica and three were from Sri Lanka. A 15th person, identified as 44-year-old David Sinclair from Jamaica, was taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest. Police also arrested two individuals who they believed ran the reported smuggling operation. No charges have been filed yet, but their initial court appearance could happen as early as Wednesday.

In addition to the yacht, customs agents seized seven thousand American dollars and eleven thousand Bahamian dollars found onboard it.

The search continues for five or refugees who eluded capture.
