Border agents: 2 pounds of heroin stashed in man's sneakers

A man who attempted to smuggle heroin into the country in his sneakers was taken into custody Sunday morning.
The man was a passenger on a shuttle bus that arrived at the Interstate 19 checkpoint about 8 a.m., according to Border Patrol agent Michael Scioli, an agency spokesman. All of the passengers had to get off the bus during the inspection.
One of the passengers had a valid border crossing card but was behaving suspiciously, Scioli said.
His sneakers were abnormally wide and when he took them off, agents found two packages — one in each shoe, he said. The contents of the package were tested and were determined to be heroin.
The two pounds of heroin is worth approximately $200,000, Scioli said.
