CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Two men from Mexico linked to an immigrant smuggling ring in South Texas are going to prison for conspiracy to transport undocumented aliens.

The U.S. Attorney's Office on Thursday announced sentences for 23-year-old Carlos Alberto Cabrera-Ruiz and 25-year-old Angel Miranda-Orosco. Both pleaded guilty in March in Corpus Christi.

Cabrera-Ruiz was sentenced to 108 months in prison, plus must make nearly $104,000 in restitution. Miranda-Orosco was sentenced to 60 months.

Prosecutors say both men were serving as guides when two smuggled immigrants died and several others were hurt during a Dec. 29 traffic accident near Mathis.

The fees allegedly were up to $5,000 per illegal immigrant.
