SONOITA, Ariz. - Two drug smugglers have been prosecuted in Mexico following a 20-mile chase across the border.

On June 8, a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office deputy was trying to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle when it fled. Together with Sonoita Station Border Patrol agents and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter, he chased the vehicle on remote rural roads south of Sonoita down to the border.

The SUV was loaded with marijuana and occupied by two people in the country illegally.

The vehicle got stuck on large rocks while speeding along the border road and the suspects bailed out and ran across the border. Mexican authorities were waiting on the other side to take them into custody.

More than 1,200 pounds of marijuana were located inside in the vehicle, valued at $600,000, which was seized by U.S. authorities.

Evidence was gathered between all the agencies involved, and the suspects were successfully prosecuted in Mexico for the narcotics smuggling crimes committed in the U.S.

According to CBP Commissioner Alan Bersin, the level of cooperation is unprecedented. He said agencies on both sides of the international border are committed to open interagency communication.

"The apprehension and the prosecution of these two individuals by Mexican authorities for smuggling drugs into the United States is a great achievement for law enforcement agencies in the states of Arizona and Sonora, Mexico," he said. "This accomplishment exemplifies the continuing progress in a bi-national collaboration to increase border security along the southwest border."
