Border Patrol Rescues 11 People From Rio Grande
Last Update: 7:41 pm
MISSION - Almost a dozen illegal immigrants are recovering after nearly drowning in the Rio Grande on Wednesday.
Border Patrol agents say they noticed 11 people struggling in the water south of Mission shortly after daybreak. The group was reportedly trying to use an inflatable raft to cross into the United States.
Emergency crews were rushed to the scene.
"Our boat patrol noticed a raft in the river that appeared to be deflated. The office of air and marine then came out, and it was evident that they were struggling and they needed assistance," says Border Patrol agent Rosie Huey.
Most of the immigrants were from Mexico and some from other Central American countries. All of them will be processed for deportation. Agents say they have rescued 39 immigrants this week alone.
