20 illegal immigrants caught on Carlsbad beach
A small boat dropped off 20 illegal immigrants on South Ponto Beach in Carlsbad and they were quickly arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents early this morning, authorities said.
Agents on patrol spotted the small panga fishing boat as it unloaded 16 men and four women about 2:40 a.m., authorities said. The two suspected smugglers on the boat returned to sea and escaped.
The group, all of them Mexican citizens, are accused of entering the country illegally and are expected to be deported, authorities said. A 26-year-old man from the group was found to be a former gang member who had been previously deported, authorities said, and he faces prosecution for for reentering the country as a prior deportee.

CARLSBAD, Calif.—Border Patrol agents have arrested 20 Mexican nationals, including a documented gang member, as they arrived in a small boat on a San Diego County beach.
Customs and Border Protection officers say the agents spotted the group on South Ponto Beach about 2:40 a.m. Monday during a routine patrol.
They arrested 16 men and four women but the two suspected smugglers managed to escape in the boat.
Officers conducted an ocean search but were unable to find the vessel.
The 26-year-old gang member, who had been previously deported, was booked into federal jail pending prosecution for re-entering the United States.
