SAN DIEGO -- Hundreds of pounds of marijuana were discovered Monday night after a Border Patrol vehicle was targeted with a red laser light, officials said.

Border agents said four men were arrested during the incident near Jacumba in rural East County.

Authorities said that the incident began when agents spotted a Ford F-150 and a GMC Suburban near the border. The pickup stopped and a man running from Mexico climbed in, according to officials. Agents said they stopped the Ford and arrested the two men inside, while the Suburban was pulled over by other officers.

Agents spotted the laser light while they were arresting the men in the pickup, according to officials. Authorities said the light was originating in Mexico and gave them reason to suspect additional smuggling activity. Drug-sniffing dogs were brought in, and they located seven duffle bags and an onion bag. The bags contained a total of 362 pounds of marijuana, according to a news release issued by the Border Patrol, which turned the drugs over the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The Border Patrol said it had seized nearly 12 tons of marijuana since the start of October.
