SONORA, Calif. — Authorities have destroyed $450 million worth of pot plants during a two-week eradication operation in Tuolumne County.

Tuolumne County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Wilson says the nearly 224,000 plants pulled from the ground set a new record for a single eradication operation in the county.

The effort included state, local and federal authorities. It ended this week. No arrests were made and no officers were injured.

Wilson says officers flew overhead to spot the grows. They then set out on foot to recover the plants, most of which were found on hillsides in deep underbrush.

Authorities also found ammunition, food and reading material near the sites. Wilson says he suspects Mexican nationals were tending the gardens.
