Police officer, two others found slain in Tijuana

TIJUANA: Three men were shot to death Saturday morning in the city's east side, among them a municipal police officer, authorities said.
They are apparently the latest casualties in a battle among drug traffickers that has left more than 100 dead in three weeks in Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito.
A spokesman for the state attorney general's office said that around 6:30 a.m police found the body of a man inside a black Cherokee station wagon stopped on Manuel J. Clothier Street.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was a municipal police officer who was attacked by gunmen from a moving vehicle. An abandoned Yukon SUV and shells from an AK-47 were found a few feet away, presumably used by the gunmen.
Two hours later and about five miles away, state authorities received a report of a man's body found on the sidewalk in the Mariano Matamoros neighborhood. He had been shot in the head, the spokesman said.
Authorities recorded a third homicide around 9 a.m. on Manuel Quiroz Street in the Luis EcheverrÃ*a neighborhood. According to preliminary findings, a group of armed men arrived at a house and yelled for a man to come out. He was sprayed with gunfire when he emerged in the doorway.
The spokesman identified the man as Alfredo Chavez, 37.
The deaths pushed the death toll since Sept. 26 to more than 100, among them some teen-agers and women. Law enforcement authorities believe rival drug trafficking groups are fighting for control of the Tijuana area.
