260 workers fired at Los Angeles County food plant

VERNON, Calif. — More than 200 workers at a major food-processing plant in Los Angeles County were fired after the Internal Revenue Service found they provided invalid Social Security numbers.

The IRS audit found the numbers of 260 workers at Overhill Farms didn't check out. The government took no action against the company but Overhill fired the workers May 31.

Overhill, whose work force is largely Latino, does not know the legal status of the fired employees but says it risked potential criminal liability under tax and immigration laws if it continued employing them after the audit.

The workers' union says the company acted hastily and unnecessarily.

The workers find themselves without work in a precarious jobs market, and without any severance or medical insurance.

Horray they were all fired! However, the state needs to go after the workers as well as the employers for back taxes.

About not knowing the status, if the potential emplyee doesn't speak English, they probably are here illegally.

i bet if this was LA City, that the former gang member, 4 time bar exam flunky mayor would still allow them to work or just move them to other departments

Don't celebrate yet. Janet N. will probably give them work visas that will let them stay for 5 years.
By that time the Kenyan will have shoved immigration Reform up our *ss.

Those employers KNEW who was illegal snd who wasn't.
Heavy fines are needed and fire the top ones.
All those jobs could have been for Americans.
I'm surprised this happened in CA?

This is what we will see now instead of I.C.E. Employment Raids.

The workers should all be deported. They are here illegally and can't work, yet still need to house, feed, and clothe themselves and their most likely huge families. To simply release them is to give them permission to find another job (notice the tight labor market is pointed out, no mention that they don't belong in that particular market) or they will "need" to turn to crime to get money. The gov't knows they can't work, so they should go home.

I hope that there are many more of this type of "RAID" in the near future.
