27 migrants without food, water rescued from desert

A group of 27 illegal immigrants, including two pregnant women, was rescued from the desert 80 miles northwest of Tucson on Thursday.

The migrants had been travelling through the desert since crossing the border Sunday, according to U.S. Border Patrol officials. They had been without food or water for three days.

A search involving the Bureau of Land Management and Border Patrol agents from the Tucson and Yuma sectors was launched after the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a member of the group.

Seven of the migrants had separated from the main group to find help. BLM and Border Patrol agents found them within two hours of receiving the 911 call.

The rest of the group was found by a helicopter crew near the Sand Tank Mountains.

Some of the migrants told agents that members of the group began to wander through the desert after the vehicle they were riding broke down.

Border Patrol officials said the migrants were found in a rugged and remote area and would have died without food or water.

A total of 56 migrants have been rescued in the Border patrol's Tucson sector since Oct. 1, the beginning of fiscal 2005. Last fiscal year, 561 were rescued.

Whatever you do, get those pregnant women back to Mexico before they give birth.
